Just to add some numbers to this discussion, here's a comparison of
the current battle system to one that has the 4:1 rule (a side can
only get 4 attack attempts in a row before the other side gets in at
least one blow). This is for the infamous "1 dragon vs. N peasants"
example.
% battles won by the peasants (1000 trials)
# Peasants Current System 4:1 Rule
---------- -------------- --------
30 50% 12%
50 85% 21%
80 100% 35%
500 92%

The case of 500 peasants vs. 1 dragon is interesting. In this case
both sides have a total AF of 500, and the peasants have a huge
numerical advantage, but (since the peasants can only come at him 4 at
a time) the dragon still has a small but real chance to win the
battle.

For comparison, how do the two systems compare in the "1 dragon vs. N
knights" battle?

% battles won by the knights (1000 trials)
# Knights Current System 4:1 Rule
---------- -------------- --------
3 34% 26%
5 64% 45%
7 79% 61%
9 90% 72%
11 96% 82%

Note that even for 3 knights, the winning percentage is down, because
the 4:1 rule limits the number of blows in a row for a side, not
really the ratio of attackers to defenders.
