You may have talked about this earlier, but I don't see how starting
everybody in the same place was necessarily a mistake. It was a design
decision that placed an interesting set of constraints on the game.
How is it an unmitigated mistake?
(I'm a computer geek, but I'm not about to call it a "feature".)
