Player-contributed press

Starting on G2 turn 40, the following rule change will be in effect:

Prisoners and NPCs will no longer add to a stack's count of nobles for the computation of the movement delay. (Item-controlled units are exempt, and count as a noble)

-- Gamemaster [200]

In response to recent allegations in the Times, I offer the following:

Although the former leader of the New Empire, Mike Blaser (aka Fox), assumed a blustering tone in the Times and in his communications with other factions, until the recent attack by PLATO the only military action taken by New Empire factions has been against stacks of savages. Since the beginning of the game we have never attacked any faction in the Yellowleaf area, and have allowed free passage and exploitation of any resources that we were not using to anyone who wished it. In fact until recently, in the area garrisoned by the New Empire there had not been a single instance of one faction attacking another. Fox's posts may have been a bit harsh, but the result was peace and protection for all in our territory. Contrast this to PLATO s occupation and their multiple attacks on neutral nobles.

The only communication I had with PLATO after Fox left the game on turn 26 was the turn before their attack (turn 32), when I spotted the large stack heading for Orianna/dh74. I sent messages to the stack leader asking about his intentions, pointing out that Fox was gone, and offering to discuss any concerns he had. I received no response. After the attack, I contacted the leader of the Creepy Crawlies, Mark Hendrickson, to arrange surrender terms, asking only for safe passage out of the area for the remaining New Empire nobles. My request was refused outright.

Although it sounds as if Fox was not very diplomatic in his correspondence with factions outside the Empire, none of the current members were aware of this fact. Had we known that Fox was being so aggressive in his diplomacy we would have taken action long ago. After his departure, we had minimal contact with any faction other than the Midnight Carnival, with whom we were negotiating borders with the Inner Circle to the northeast. Any claims by PLATO that the New Empire continued Fox's policies are an outright lie.

My apologies to PLATO if they believed the exaggerated claims Fox made. The New Empire had ten members at its largest, and by the time of the attack had shrunk to four factions. PLATO will probably chose not to believe this so they can continue their attacks on all and sundry in the Yellowleaf area.

If I have offended the Inner Circle, I apologize. Although you have not attacked anyone, you have been giving aid to the enemy. Your noble, Harlequin, was observed entering the Crimson Citadel early in the turn after the attack, indicating to me your close and friendly relationship with the attackers. I will take no action against you, but please don t ask me to believe that you are completely neutral.

Any factions who suffer due to the depredations of PLATO and who are interested in doing something about it, contact me for details at mhughes@rsva.trw.com.

Aliestar had heard rumours of the wonderous continent of Provinia, but actually being there was far more daunting than he had imagined. Things could have been far worse had he not contacted the House Carnelian and pledged fealty to Jheremai the Scarlet. Now he just had to find his way...

-- Aliestar [6309]

To Entwaidamela, my most puissant lord of New South Provinia:

All is quiet on the western front as of this message. We have seen to the cleansing of the cities of Trullion and Orianna, destroying many of our dishonorable enemies and their foul works. We have released those that proved to be unassociated with the enemy, that were caught unawares by the swiftness of our assault, and we have their pledge of honor to depart the region until a cessation of hostilities. We are vigilant and maintain agressive patrols of the new borders, ever seeking out those who would threaten to overrun the land, and turn it to chaos. The matter of the raiders of our garrisons, which you spoke of to us, should soon be well in hand. Our force of heavy knights have arrived, and requested the right to pursue this matter, as they came late to the battles. We have granted them the honor of destroying this last remnant of resistance. They shall be led by Tyr, our Captain of Horse, and he assures us that they will be ridden down and utterly destroyed. We have no doubt of his words, and expect the rabble soon to be no more. We await your further orders on the continued conduct of the western campaign.

Your most loyal and obediant Marshal of the West,

-- Cernennos [1947]

Rumors

The Free Drassan Trade Guild would like to take a moment to express its displeasure with the events that have taken place near Yellowleaf of late. We understand many of the reasons that the groups known as PLATO, Inner Circle, and others affiliated with said groups felt the need to retaliate against the New Empire. It is unfortunate that a more diplomatic solution could not be reached. However, the attacking of neutral nobles was indeed uncalled for. Men must have their wars--but commerce is bigger than egos. We hope that in the future more consideration for the merchant class can be provided by warring nations. --Thankyou Free Drassan Trade Guild

Toto .... I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.

The Siege at Grenth Month 4, continued

I spied the carnage below, and saw Gal holding off a large lizard. There were three elites left, and they guarded her flanks. To my immediate right were the four bows remaining in this section of the castle. Surrounding Gal were many corpses, too many to count, of giant rats and centaurs, some still writhing in pain. There was even an enemy Beastmaster lying on the ground in agony.

As I unstrapped my bow (every warrior should know archery), there was an unearthly scream, and through the now battered and open gates came a scaled beast of giant proportions. Its wings flapped, and its teeth were bloody. Two of the bows panicked and jumped to the courtyard. The lizard was also unnerved, and paused; it was enough to sink an arrow into its throat.

With lightning speed, the dragon disemboweled one of the elites. The last image I have of Gal was dodging the huge razor-sharp claw the dragon aimed at her; the enemy soldiers pressing on the wall defenses caught my attention, and, as I turned to survey the damage, I was pushed over into the moat.

*** Month 5

When I awoke, I was in the woods surrounding the now conquered castle. A peasant lay cold nearby, and I put on his clothes; I would be more difficult to locate among the masses exiting the region.

I spotted one of the carrier pigeons flying overhead, and I called it to me. I then wrote this report, which you are now reading. I wrote until nightfall, released the pigeon, and began the journey to our now gathering army several leagues away.

For song number 5 in our 1970's war song series we return to Led Zeppelin for a cut off one of the greatest rock and roll records ever made: Led Zeppelin IV.

The Battle Of Evermore

Queen of Light took her bow And then she turned to go, The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light. The dark Lord rides in force tonight And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes.

Side by side we wait the might Of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder Down in the valley blow, I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, Waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold, The seeds of happiness, The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no. Oh,-------dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry, Pick up you swords and fly. The sky is filled with good and bad That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long The beads of time pass slow, Tired eyes on the sunrise, Waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed The woe of aftermath, The drums will shake the castle wall, The ring wraiths ride in black, Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow, Shoot straighter than before. No comfort has the fire at night That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the mornin' light. The magic runes are writ in gold To bring the balance back. Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by, With flames from the dragon of darkness The sunlight blinds his eyes.

Led Zeppelin

Can't we all just get along?

"No Apology Necessary...!"

"Some apologist for the invasion squad wrote:"

Hey, pal, I'm not _apologizing_ for anything or anyone.

"Who is the AOO?"

Brother, if you don't even know THAT much Oly history, you've no business participating in this discussion...

"Fox is no longer with us." "Fox is no longer with us, and has been absent for some time."

Sounds like a mantra. You guys let Fox run the show, and either chose to not be aware of what he was doing, or didn't care. Whichever way it was, hope you're enjoying the consequences. Maybe next time you'll keep a shorter leash on your mutt. (By your reasoning, as soon as Hitler killed himself, the Allies should have just packed up & left Germany, right?)

They will emerge unscathed. As far as the evil contingencies are concerned, Brandon Lee said it best in The Crow: "I guess it s not a good day to be a bad guy".

The drill instructor, Korl, a black and white bullseye shaped patch sewed on brim of his cap, prodded a haggard prisoner into Goran's tent. The prisoner had feral, bloodshot eyes, matted hair and a wounded shoulder. "He like the rest?" asked Goran without looking up from the papers strewn across the table in front of him. It seemed everyone was swimming in paperwork. Separate forms, in quadruplicate, had to be submitted to the Merciless One for friendly casualty reports, enemy casualty reports, resource requests and troop requests. Korl nodded curtly. He spoke rarely, never cavorted with the others, but possessed an accuracy with the bow almost as uncanny as Goran himself. "Sir," demanded Goran, briefly glaring at the prisoner "what is your name!?" The prisoner offered Goran a goggle-eyed look, lolled his head side to side like a marionette, then snickered insanely. "Fox made me do it, " he whispered, a line of drool escaping the corner of his mouth. "Fox is gone. Fox made me do it. Fox is gone." He repeated it like a mantra until Korl cuffed him on the base of the skull with the hilt of a dagger. Unconscious, the prisoner slumped to the ground. "Any word from back home about what's wrong with these men?" Korl asked, voice tinged with genuine concern. "Unfortunately, no. I got letters from both Garnet and Cthulu concerning this strange malady. Neither has ever heard of or seen anything like it." "Did they prescribe a treatment?" "Garnet figures they are inflicted with an insidious demonic possession. Leechings begin tomorrow. If they fail, we'll try skull trephining. After that, who knows." Korl shuddered visibly. "Put him in with the others," ordered Goran. "Then rouse the men for the morning drills." After Korl had left, Goran pushed back from his paperwork, poured himself some coffee. Frowning, he drained the cup in several great draughts. The enemy had proven no better at growing coffee than they were in battle. Goran fetched his composite bow from a hook in the tent post, exited into the brisk early morning breeze. In the distance, he heard the clang of metal on metal. He knew it was Entwemadela drilling the new recruits. The men called him "he who brings fire", a moniker well earned in light of his fearlessness and bloodthirstiness in battle. Goran had never seen a man fight so hard and hate an enemy so much. It was almost like he was possessed. Goran trod to the archery range, nocked the first arrow of ten dozen he'd loose this morning. Hopefully, he'd have live enemies to target soon. Practice may have made perfect; however, it was utterly boring.
