The RW element that seems lacking is just the sort of oversea aspect that 
Glassco mentioned: more profitable trade overseas.
In a [real fantasy] world, there would be roundships stuffed to the gills 
with tradegoods going from continent to continent, selling things they 
bought cheaply in, say, Provinia to Krussos.  A common good in Provinia 
would be a rare good in Krussos.  (Provinia grows citrus, Krussos does 
not... and so forth)
Here in G2, the common goods are hardly worth the time it takes to 
transport, while the rare goods are all overland and temporary.  Continent 
to continent trade just isn't going to happen.  (Likewise, piracy, 
armadas, and more general conflict.)
If I was rewriting trade, I would group the tradegoods into categories: 
luxuries, meats, vegetables, spices, finished goods, etc., and make at 
least one rare and common on each continent.  There would still be money 
to be made moving items locally (and from rare goods), but much more from 
taking them off-continent.  X% of the off-continent markets would buy the 
common/rare off-continent goods, and they would be marked up much less 
than the true rare goods, but enough to make them worth carrying.
Further, because I love randomness, I'd have them change every few game 
years just to make the game a continuing challenge. (the off-continent 
markets would differ among themselves as to exactly how much each paid for 
something)
As far as the current rare goods thing goes, I think they're worthwhile to 
the trader, but I don't have enough experience to see how they're open for 
abuse.
