Turn 32 orders due: Friday, July 24, 1992

** No Olympia July 31st! I will be at Siggraph. **

Orders are due 6:00pm EDT, 22:00 GMT.

Questions, comments, bug reports, to play: olympia@rt.com

Changes:

I didn't deliver on the new RECRUIT and IMPRESS changes, but I made the second argument be the number of men so that all of the orders this turn wouldn't be ruined.

New study argument:

STUDY skill [days] [level]

Study skills for the specified number of days, or until level is reached, whichever comes first. Days defaults to 14.

The levels are back on the subskills. You can study subskills to raise their level. Study of subskills incurs the same per-day cost that study of the parent skill would.

The guild study bonuses are gone.

The group study discount is gone.

Let's see if I can leave the skill system alone for a turn. :-)

Carrying capacities no longer have a hard cut-off.

Stacks traveling by land or water may exceed their carrying capacity by up to 100%. Any excess over the rated capacity, however, will cause the stack to travel slower.

I've added a gender tag on character units. You may do one of:

SET GENDER male SET GENDER female SET GENDER neuter

This will merely control how some messages are formatted, i.e. whether "he", "she" or "it" is used. Not many messages make use of this feature at the moment, but more should in the future.

GUARDIANS OF THE PASS [1187] REPELL SAVAGES INVASION IN ANTRESK

A band of savages arrived from Uldim Pass and tried to get con- trol over the new tower. They were arrested and executed by the Guardians of the Pass. Things went worse in the peaceful town of Coinbalth, about one month north of Uldim Pass, where the famous "Merry Dwarves" were assaulted and executed by a large band of more than 150 orcs. Prenola's faction in Coinbalth was most probably killed as well. They are led by Foultooth, a huge seven feet high orc, who calls himself "Hater of Humans". There's nothing to fear from the north before the spring, since heavy snow is blocking the Pass. But orcs are breeding in the mountains, evil is at work, and soon hundreds of orcs will go through the Pass and menace the old world. Be warned and ready your weapon!

FlagShip boats is currently taking orders for ships. Although clippers can be produced most of the orriginal ships will be large ocean going ships, which will take longer to build, and cost a lot more. If you are interested in any form of ship please contact FlagShip Ships directly at Olympia P.O. Box 915 (Someone already stole my idea on P.O. Boxes :-) You can also connect FlagShip ships at jwoolsey@server.gfx.engga.uwo.ca if ground mail just isn't fast enough for you.

Remember if you aren't using FlagShip ships you aren't using the best.

I have been floating around near Drucartan for quite some time now, and I have had quite a few run ins with D'Arc. Although he may have jumped the gun I do not blame him, since the player he killed had the potential to become unstoppable with a little warning. I support his action, and I think he has actually stabolized Drucartan, and his surrounding region in the process. It is unfortunate that a player had to die in the process, but peace has its costs. I am BTW the player 915 that had little to do with the actual attack, and it took me quite some time to figure out what actually happened in town that day near the end of the month. I am just posting this to say I support D'Arc, and Drucartan contrary to popular belief is not a warzone. It is however severly worked and entertained out. John the Lucky

REWARD 3,000 GOLD

WANTED SPINEY NORMAN [878] Also known as Ethelred the Unready Hugh Jass, New Entity, Paddy O'Furniture DEAD OR ALIVE (I'M NOT FUSSY) FOR THE MURDER OF WULF [884]

REWARD 3,000 GOLD

Signed: Son of Wulf [910]

Roving Reporter's Column ========================

The Country comes alive ! =========================

As I pass through the regions, provinces and cities of this mighty land, I and my friends have started coming across more and more local wildlife. For quite some time, the only wildlife to be seen were a few forests and the other characters as they went about their lives. Then a few Trolls appeared, vanished, reappeared and settled in for a long stay. They were nearly all slaughtered by the paranoid inhabitants within a couple of months of them first being seen. And now they are an endangered species, on the brink of extinction. Then Savages and Faeries started to move across the lands. The Savages were often left alone because they tended to travel in groups, and no-one trusted groups. The Faeries were left alone because most people feared their magical powers ! Who wants to live near creatures who will steal all your money and, before you can react, use magical spells to 'Slow' you down so that you cannot fight them effectively ?

Now an even greater threat has arrived. It is not as bad as the Pain that existed in the Southlands, but it is a threat none-the-less. In the regions surrounding Resh, many bands of marauding orcs have suddenly appeared from their sleep of centuries and returned to plague the land. Bands of 10 and 20 have banded together into a rampaging army of 200 or more who are capturing all whom they meet in their chaotic march. Who knows what their intentions are ? So far, they have captured and robebd those they meet. But who knows when this may turn to torture and murder ?

Will the threat be halted and the army scattered ?? Watch this space....

The Olympia turn checker!

It keeps going and going and going!

This marvel of the midevil age reads in turn commands, checks syntax, and prints out an english version of the commands for easy checking. No longer will you buy 5 of 6 instead of 6 of 5. It also does reasonability checks (ie. you can't buy Osswid, and you can't terrorize a rug).

Binaries for Next, Vax, Sparc, Decstation and Sun3 machines running UNIX are available from shrimp.cs.washington.edu in pub/olympia. Source code is NOT available, so don't ask.

Comments/questions/bug reports to hauck@cs.washington.edu.

Note: For bug reports, please include the line that triggered the bug, and the output the checker gave.

The black and white banner -- Per pale Argent and Sable an Owl displayed counterchanged. It was barely visible in the dense fog that had apparently taken up permanent residence in East Urvil. The tower was no longer visible and only the watch bells reminded those in the small camp under the banner that it was still there. Varian stood outside of his tent, wondering about what would happen next. Briareos and his men had moved out of the camp, as had some of Rumil Tauron's men, but they didn't leave town. He wondered why. Over behind the fire, he could barely make out the figure of Touchstone, building a tiny tower of stone. Suddenly the tower wobbled and then tumbled over. "Damn," Touchstone said angrily. Varian smiled but the smile faded as he looked at the expression on the soldier approaching him. He held a letter. "What is it?" Varian asked. "News from the North. You friend Possoegrenoe has been capture in the North, as has Rolondo Redbeard." "Captured? How?" "Apparently a large force of Orcs has moved into the Resh region and closed it off. They were easily able to defeat forces larger than their own. They're quite fierce." "And where are they now?" "Some are in Lower Resh. Others are elsewhere." Varian looked at the soldier for a moment. "And Briareos and Rumil's men?" "They are apparently not being permitted to travel due to some sort of obscure regulation." "Wonderful." Varian paused. "Get in contact with Oleg and the others. We must form a posse as soon as possible to rescue Possoegrenoe and Rolondo." The soldier turned and sprinted off into the fog. "Just what we needed," Varian said. "Orcs with swords and plate mail..."

For those who want more mistakes Top 5 Mistakes by a confused (new) adventurer. From the Home Office in Port Aurnos [202]. Box [932].

5. I reissued the previous turns orders by mistake. 4. I told Oleg a secret. 3. I buy ore to make leather armour. 2. I didn't have a [5] in my faction name. 1. I thought that loyalty would increase if I wore a Rug, not a Fine Cloke.

Stay tuned for more adventures of the poor and clueless.

Oleg the Loudmouth's Interesting Player List ============================================

This is a list if people you might want to watch out for, because they've done, erm, "interesting" things in the past. Note that obituaries are no longer promptly reported, if at all -- so you'll have to watch & contribute to this list to see what's going on.

New stuff this turn: player 819 kicks the bucket.

Amber [912] -- Killed one of player 823's units in Habyn on turn 28. Says it was a "legitimate act of war." So tell me, when was the peace treaty signed? Units controlled: 1515 1516 2156 2195.

Bastrestric ther Archymonaged [801] -- Killed 1 unit on turn 23 in Chardia, which Milinkthos claims was independent. Listed as a buddy by Dr. Pain. Has an outstanding offer to buy flowers for my funeral, should I be killed. Now tell us, why are you letting 912 stack with the castle?

Seldon the Avatar [809] -- killed 1863 in Pesbrand on turn 20. Killed 1 player and 3 units in Ilion on turn 23. Units owned: 1400, 1773. 5,000 gold bounty offered by Tony Wayland [572] for "Seldon the Avatar and all his units."

John Smith [823] -- killed unit that killed player 830 and others in Chardia (i.e., apparently 830 was pro-Pain and the attacker was anti-Pain, then John Smith killed the attacker.); killed 4 other units in Camaris since, which he says were independent. Says he is the protector of Camaris. Units owned: 1317 1494 1935 1972?.

Maidez de la Montt [868] -- Attempted to kill 6 players turns 21-23, but all failed. Attacked 3 players in Pesbrand on turn 25 for booty. Units owned: 1991 1995 1998 2007 2012.

Spiney Norman [878] -- Apparently the owner of Fengal's Hoodlums [2037], which killed a newbie on turn 23 in Kircarth. Fengal's Hoodlums was captured turn 24, and the combat reports lists 878 as the faction of Fengal's Hoodlums. Spiney claims that he was framed, and the owner gave him the unit at the start of turn 24. Truth or fiction? You be the judge.

Stryder [898] & Phillipe [905] -- Attacked a player who successfully fled. These guys claim that they thought this player was independent and were out to guard his gold for him. Uhuh. The victim wasn't independent, he just doesn't answer his email as promptly as some.

A mass of newbies, including 879, 877, 881, 882, and 876, attacked player 880 in Kircarth. They say that this player was inactive, so they captured him and took his gold. Use it or lose it, eh? They're still holding him prisoner.

Sightings last turn: ====================

801 and 912 are mostly camping in Chardia these days. 868 was reported in West Habyn.

If you believe any information on this list is incorrect, please write me. If you would like to contribute information, especially combat reports and/or sighting reports, please write. Information is like a breath of fresh air: it makes everyone's day happier.

Oleg's Free Lore and Map collection are still at version 3, although various contributions have pushed it close to version 4. If you'd like a copy, drop me a line. And remember -- if you get what you pay for, then information must be worthless.

Over the past two weeks many messages have been sent through e-mail which are more appropriately discussed in a rec.something? news group. I under- stand the enthusiasm of those involved in the discussion, but I am sure that many others are just bothered by this extra noise in our mail boxes. Let's try to limit mail to a few important messages, such as implemented changes to the game, and REALLY important stuff (like "ding dong, Dr. Pain is dead"). Perhaps it would also be helpful if someone would summarize the discussions in the news group to the Times (any volunteers?).

I am starting a new fanzine for free PBEM wargames, called (very originally) PBEM. I posted a copy to rec.games.pbm, but if you don't read that, you can write me for a a copy in email. It's 20kbytes long.

The Log of Brillan Damar

"Fall has started to give way to winter. I did not expect to still be here in Kircarth a year after setting upon its shores.

Life has been very interesting, and not anything like I had expected it to be. I'm now in charge of many men who look to me for commands and advice. It is a heavy burden to bear at times, and the weather turning to winter does not ease my spirits."

Brillan looked up from his log. The foggy sun was setting in Kircarth. Winter, he thought, the time of nature's death...

There was a soft knock at the door.

"Come"

The door slowly opened, and Alaric Lightshine entered the stone-walled, bleak looking room. His thoughts betrayed his pain.

Brillan could tell something was up. "What is it, Alaric?"

Alaric spoke in a soft voice, almost inaudible. "Edheler is dead, sir."

Over the next few minutes, Alaric reported what he knew of what happened. Edheler was anxious to pay his men, but didn't have the gold to do so. He had tried to entice some of the workforce to move out of Drucartan, and the citizens felt threatened by this proposal, due to the large number of men under his control. Many of them got together and persuaded Beleg Stongbow, Edheler's taskmaster, to change sides to theirs and attack his previous master. The battle was short and bloody.

"Who was primarily responsible for this?"

"We're not sure, sir, but we believe that D'Arc Shadowborn was intimately involved. He has been public with his feelings on the matter."

Brillan slowly dropped his head to his hands. Indeed, Winter was the time of death. A few minutes passed while both men mourned their brother.

Alaric broke the silence. "There's more sir. We've received an urgent letter from some allies to the southeast. It seems that many orcs have invaded into the regions surrounding Resh. At least one Alliance member has been captured, and there are other prisoners as well."

"Damn." It seemed that this wasn't the end of Death's visit. Brillan's men weren't ready for an extensive battle against trained foes. "Prepare Crusher's men for travel. Activate the Joyous Guard. Please ask the city council and the Guild for extra assistance and staging help. See if you can find Lance and ask him to see me. We'll need to leave men here to guard the city. Tell the men I'll personally lead them into battle against the orcs. We'll leave within the month." He wrote down some words onto a piece of paper and passed it to Alaric. "After you've done these deeds, I'd like you to take this to the local signmaker. Get it engraved into stone. I doubt D'Arc will do anything like this for Edheler."

As the sun rose on the city of Kircarth, a tombstone had been placed next to the weather-beaten notice calling for the capture of Spiney Norman. It's words shone stark against the white snow.
