Player-contributed press

To the inhabitants of the Yellowleaf area:

The Crimson Citadel in Azrain fell to an act of unprovoked aggression last turn by an alliance known as PLATO based in Camaris. The leaders of this alliance, the factions known as the Creepy Crawlers, Loopalootaloofa, and the Incognito Illuminiti have refused all offers to negotiate an end to the conflict and have expressed their intent to continue with attacks on ALL nobles in the area:

>>One of the disadvantages of holding the land surrounding a safe haven >>is the number of neutral/newbie factions that are transiting, >>exploring, or otherwise active in the area. Your allies may end up >>making more enemies than they intend if they are indiscriminate in >>their attacks. > >Yes, we're worried about this, but will try to free them as quickly as >we determine who they are.

The group known as the Inner Circle, led by the Midnight Carnival and operating around Nantasarn to the north east of Yellowleaf, is allied with PLATO as well, and may participate in their aggression this turn.

Any factions who suffer due to the depredations of PLATO and who are interested in doing something about it, contact me for details at mhughes@rsva.trw.com.

Let it be known that the northern lights alliance is laying a claim to the lands defined by the corner points of aw48, aw67, bm48, and bm67. If anyone has a dispute with that claim, please contact us so that we can quickly work out mutual borders.

I have three things I would like to make known in this (extremely long) post. All are regarding offers to buy, sell, or trade for some type of beast. If you have no interest in the trade of beasts, and do not plan to devolop one within the next several months, I suggest you conserve a few minutes of your precious time by skipping past this message. (You can always look it up in the Times archive if your plans change unnexpectedly.)

First off, If anyone in the general environs of the Imperial City has captured or otherwise come into possession of any giant birds [281], nazgul [55], or winged horses [54] through legitimate means(I do not support theivery or banditry, nor will I do business with any noble or faction known to be involved in any such activity), I am willing to pay any reasonable price(either in gold, or in the form of trade or service, if you would prefer) offered for up to three specimens of each type of creature for use in my research. (The economic situation of my nobles in that region gives a new, and entirely more frightening meaning to the word "eratic", but I should be able to arrange payment in no more than three months, unless extenuous circumstances occur. Uffortunately, these tend to happen all to often to innocent explorers, traders, travelers, of just about anyone weaker than the local ruffians and savages in Olympia.) I would vastly prefer that all transactions be made within the safe confines of the Imperial City(for the safety of both parties, as well as for my convenience). If, however, I am left with no other choice, I can possibly make arrangements to have the goods picked up, but will be willing to pay only about half what I would if they were to be delivered to my doorstep.

If you are in possession of any of the aforementioned beasts, and wish to make a deal, but are not anywhere in the vicinity of the Imperial City(if your most precise knowledge of the location of the capital city of Olympia is "Near the center of Provinia", don't feel stupid, that's as much as many others know, and even more than a few; even though I can't make even a tenuous claim to the credit for this, it suit my liking perfectly), contact me anyway. We may or may not be able to work out a deal, but the only thing you have to lose is a few short minutes of your life.

The second matter of concern is regarding many other types of beasts. Specifically the following: rat [279], ratspider [81], giant lizard [282], harpie [285], giant spider [278], lion [280], chimera [284], dragon [286]. If you are passing through the city of Aeltra [m19], in the plains province [bx48], and are willing to sell any of these beasts for relatively low prices, I will be glad to purchase as many as my budget and common sense allow(so don't even try to sell me fourteen dozen rats). (The economic situation of my noble in Aeltra is vastly more stable and substancial than that of the nobles in IC, and I should be able to afford quite a decent quantity of these beasts.) I realize some of the above listed beasts(i.e. dragons) are very unlikely to have been captured as of yet, and even if they have been, are even more unlikely to for sale for anything of lesser value than say, your firstborn child, but they are listed above more for the sake of completeness than any real hope of someone offering them for sale(but also just in case lady luck smiles upon me, as she seems lately to have done with rather greater frequency than any man of less than saintly virtue rightly deserves).

Last, I am offering centaurs [271] for sale in the city of Aeltra, for only sixty gold pieces each. A price that I think is more than fair for such finely bred beasts. Centaurs have the same weight and carrying capacity of a horse, as well as a combat value of (30,30,0) for any noble with the Use beasts in battle subskill. With the second best combat ability of all the beasts that can be bred in a single week, and the capacity to carry 150 units of weight at riding speed, these beasts are sure to be among the most widely used beasts of our era(i.e. G2). Currently, there are five available to be purchased, but if a visible demand appears within the next few turns, more will be bred in order to satisfy all who desire them. As the demand increases, so, logically, will the cost, so buy them while there cheap.

Well, if you got through all that without throwing your arms up in despair, confusion, frustration, or some combination of the three, and without skipping on ahead due to boredom or a natural aversion to spending over two hours reading the Times, I congratulate you, and offer the small consolation that at least you didn't have to write it. If you learned anything that you consider useful, I am glad for you, and if you did not, I offer my condolences, for what they're worth. If you think that we may be able to work out a business arrangement contact me at about it rww@ica.net. (I promise that my e-mail corespondence won't even approach the size of this post unless I decide that my fingers need to be punished in a cruel and tortuous manner.)

To all those who are opposed to this sort of annoying, space and time consuming Times filler, wasting the few precious minutes that you can afford to spend on Olympia each week, I assure you that a simple, "If your are interested in buying, selling, or trading of different types of beasts, please mail me.", may seem to you to be more efficient in theory, it would not have worked nearly so well as you might expect in actual practice.

My Olympia II page for all G2 players is up at:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/4545/

I've added some new terrain data to the map of Provinia (table format: Netscape 3.x or higher is recommended.) I'm putting the new map data up as my time allows. I've made a start on the rework of the site, and on making it user friendly for those w/o table-capable browsers. Look for the coming changes in the next couple of weeks, and continue sending your contributions to me at:

bswain@nyx.net or stahl_und_stein@hotmail.com

I'm still seeking player essays, articles, etc. and will act as host to most any Olympia related info. You send the material and I'll put it into HTML as my time permits. I'm also interested in linking to any other Olympia related sites, so send those URLs gents.

Fellow Olympians:

Insofar as the New Empire, whose most visible presence was the Crimson Citadel in Azrain, assumed from the beginning a most tyranical posture on Provinia and elsewhere,

And insofar as the New Empire attempted to restrict unnecessarily and unfairly the collection of resources in this area,

And insofar as the sinister New Empire has threatened, attempted to intimidate, and generally plotted against me & my friends,

And insofar as they have been rude, obnoxious, and basically a bunch of weenies to boot,

And insofar as we have our own expansionist plans,

And insofar as we could pull it off,

I, Ming the Mercilous, with my comrades, have liberated Azrain from these felons.

In our sweep of Azrain & Trullion, we may have attacked some who are not involved in the conflict. Collateral damage is part of war, so don't whine about it. But if you can prove you're not part of the New Empire, & we took your noble, write us, & we will set your noble free. If you are a newbie and recently started in Yellowleaf you should defintitely get in touch with us. And if you are a member of what is left of the New Empire you may contact us and plead for mercy--who knows, we might even listen.

Otherwise, it might be prudent for all and sundry to avoid the city of Yellowleaf and the provinces surrounding it, as well as the nearby sealanes, for at least the next couple of turns. An announcement will be forthcoming as to when this travel advisory will be lifted, and at that time rules and regulations will be posted as to travel, trade, and resource collection in the former New Empire area. Be assured that we will be far more open in our policies than the previous overlords.

I am, your humble servant,

-- Ming the Merciless [2900]

Rumors

MAJOR LESSONS FROM THE DOWNFALL OF THE NEW EMPIRE 1) Keep tabs on whoever is running diplomacy for your alliance. Actual diplomatic ability is a big plus in this job! 2) Threats, boasting, and bullying do not demonstrate actual diplomatic ability. 3) If you insult your neighbors, don't be surprised when they turn into enemies. 4) If you're aware that you've made enemies, it's a good idea to keep tabs on them. The preparation for a large invasion is difficult to hide. 5) Building your castle in a port city can lead to unpleasant surprises. 6) If you do have a castle in a port city, naval patrols of your coastal waters are a good idea. 7) It's a dangerous world. Paranoia is a Good Thing.

Report on the Siege at Grenth Month 2

Our pleas for help have gone unanswered. The neighboring kingdom, fearing retaliation by the enemy, has demanded we leave their land at once. This will cause delays in a counter-attack force being raised.

The enemy sent out raiding parties into our land, and successfully pillaged three nearby provinces. A smaller stack also converged on the city by sea, and joined with the enemy force. Our mine, as expected, was taken by the enemy and now supplies them with gold and ore.

Our tacticians estimate that there is now a greater than 60% chance of losing the upcoming battle. We feel they'll attack next month, or early the month after. The mages are almost prepared for a counter-strike, but unless it can wipe out an entire army, it is too little, too late. The mages are also preparing to leave through magick means as soon as an evacuation order is given. Our hero, Gal, claims there is still hope, and is training some of the forces into an elite force.

Our liege has forsaken us. Our neighbors are frightened, and think appeasement will work against a ruthless enemy. We despair.

Number two in our series of 1970's Heavy Metal war songs:

War Pigs

Generals gathered in their masses just like witches at black masses evil minds that plot destruction sorcerers of death's construction in the fields the bodies burning as the war machine keeps turning death and hatred to mankind poisoning their brainwashed minds... Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away they only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait 'till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning as the war machine keeps burning No more war pigs of the power Hand of god has sturck the hour Day of judgement, god is calling on their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan, laughing, spreads his wings ALL RIGHT NOW!

The EA is a bust!

Yellowleaf STC types are planning treachery.

Let it be known that I, Pepe Le Peu, claim the area east of and including line 7, and south of and including line br, extenting east towards Yellowleaf and south towards Harn. (now known as the Brothel of the Festering Pus) (We're looking into a better name, really!)

I advice against hostility around Brothel Harn. As you may know from the Venereal Chronicles, the Raid Battalion is on R & R nearby.

Oh yeah, and Yvengi is a louse!

Sun Tzu says:

Beware of Ming, for clearly one so brutal and effective is a master of warfare.

Yngvi is not _just_ a louse, he's Oleg's brother-in-law...!!!

What are the Rimmon Muskateers doing around Boden City cq77 and Chronos cn77?? It is a long way from Kygor's Blessing. How much of Provinia do these buffoons want??

Trullion has fallen and Ming is on the throne. The reavers from across the sea have returned. Provinia quakes and the nobles chatter like mice. Who is next???

The Mouth of the South:

Rumor has it that a powerful alliance is being formed in the Harn region. According to reliable sources, Bob the Jolly Fat Guy is at the helm of said organisation. TMOTS have received confirmation that some of regions most fierce military commanders have already signed up. Names mentioned in connection with the Harn Alliance include the Notorious Red Lord, Jheremai the Scarlet, as well as the infamous commander of the Black Flag Battalion, Noire Immortalis. Other sources point out Khamath the Horseman and Hunting Dak Forrest.

TMOTS can be contacted through 1619@g2.pbm.com

***** Traveller's Advisory *****

The regions around Yellowleaf and Camaris should be considered a war zone. Reliable reports of attacks by members of PLATO in eastern Camaris are being circulated, and dispatches, purportedly from members of PLATO, have refused negotiations. In other worlds like this, members of PLATO have not respected the neutrality of thrid parties, and rejected out of hand attempts to negotiate by neutrals. All factions should consider acts of war and piracy to be likely occurances in the areas of Camaris and Yellowleaf. Extreme caution is advised.
