Player-contributed press

There are many aspects of Olympia which involve Peaceful interaction, but those of us who play the game for peaceful goals should not ask those who play for war to cease their wars, any more than we would want them to impose their wars on us. For there are many aspects of Olympia which require war. The game would be incomplete without it. Many who were once peaceful have undoubtedly shifted their minds to war when the peaceful goals have been filled, or at least satisfied.

Those who wish to live in peace should be allowed to do so. Those who wish to make war with eachother should be allowed to do so. The problem arises when those who wish to make war are unsure of which other players also wish to make war. What is the telling sign?

The way I look at it is that war is about territory, and who owns it. I own a castle, but have as of yet not garrisoned any provinces. If I were to garrison a province, I am afraid that it would say to the world that my noble who owns the castle and all who defend it, are ready for war. Since war is about owning land, and garrisoning a plot of land is a direct declaration that you own the land. It seams a reasonable dividing point between the peaceful and the war ready.

However, I am sure many of my allies would disagree with my analysis, feeling that they have garrisoned unclaimed territories in peace.

What do others feel is the telling sign that separates the peaceful from those ready to make war?

House Greyfletch is currently undertaking an expedition for the Royal Geographical Society. The Grey Bird [fd1t] is currently circumnavigating the world. It is flying a Royal Geographical Banner. If you see it bumping against your coastline, or visiting your port, don't be alarmed, it's just passing through.

NEW MEMBERSHIP

We are very pleased to announce the addition of Clan Talavyn [qn3] as a Charter Member of the Royal Geographical Society. Clan Talavyn has pledged to undertake an RGS Expedition to areas unknown, and will be travelling up to our Drucartan headquarters to work with ourselves and the Lords of Revelstone. Welcome, brothers! May Atnerks bless us, and grant us the strength to complete the Great Work that is before us.

RGS ON ORMOS

More good news: We now lay formal claim to the island of Ormos, just west of Drucartan. As we were invited to take possession by its former owner, we consider our claim to legal and binding.

Visitors are welcome, but we ask you to please notify us beforehand of your arrival, and also to refrain from bringing large numbers of escorts. As the island consists entirely of plains, and is actually as flat as a billiards table, there are very few rescources to squabble over...

AN UNFORTUNATE INTERLOPER

Last turn we apprehended a trespasser on the island, a man so poor he didn't even have a name. If the responsible faction will contact us immediately, we will see that he is released unharmed.

THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY

is a non-political, non-aligned Organization devoted to the exploration of Olympia and its environs. Each week, we publish our findings in the New Atlas, which is distributed to the Membership at large. We are currently seeking new Members, who must be Factions in good standing, and who must also satisfy the following criteria:

* Charter Membership. A large, one-time gift of new mapping information, or agreement to undertake an RGS Expedition, or a significant contribution of resources in support of the Society and its cause. Charter Members are announced each week in the Olympia Times. They receive updates of the New Atlas on a regular basis, and gain access to the RGS archives.

* Affilitate Membership. Any reasonable contribution of new mapping information entitles a Faction to Affiliate status. The identities of our Affiliates are kept strictly secret. They receive an update of the Atlas upon each submission of new information.

ASSISTANCE FOR STARTING FACTIONS

The Society extends the hand of friendship to all recently-formed Factions. We will send any such Faction one copy of the New Atlas, free of obligation, together with whatever advice and assistance our humble Organization can provide.

For more information, contact our Representative, the Honorable Brett Miller, at 103534.1454@compuserve.com .

THE RGS WEB SITE

The Royal Geographical Society wishes to express its gratitude to the First Bank of Provinia, which has set up a web page on our behalf. To access this work-in-progress, go to:

No. He's too busy building the building. (RTFM)

Capt. Hook was right. You can. But even he couldn't make them fish.

With both Netscape and Mosaic you can disable the background. Go read your manual.

But as you complain so much I've now changed the background. BTW the pages are moving soon to http://194.177.182.12/olympia/

The young nobleman stood in the rear of the ship, watching the crew adjust the sails. He stood to the left of the helmsman, who leaned casually against the wheel, keeping an eye on the compass, but having no problems keeping the Grey Bird on course. Kadar had grown up a lot on this trip. He'd only joined House Greyfletch a month before they had set sail from his home city of Peash, sailing westward into the sunset. Now, 2 years later, they were coming back towards Peash, this time from the east. Every man of the crew was on the deck, or up in the rigging, watching the northern horizon, looking for the first sign of the southern coastline of West Camaris, waiting for their first glimpse of home. They'd seen a lot. They'd sailed past the Isle of Deddou, and fought cyclopses on a small island to it's north. They'd stopped off in cities in fabled Torba Bacor, and loded up the holds with obsidian. They'd made landfall on the southeastern corner of East Camaris, and skirted the southern edge of South Camaris. They'd sailed past the islands of Noren, and Broen Rock, and just glimpsed the northenmost point of East Drucartan. Now the navigator had said they were back in waters they'd traversed before having sailed around the world. They made the turn northward a week agon, and were expecting landfall any day. They'd seen gulls the day before, so they all knew they were close. Suddenly the quiet afternoon was broken by a shout from the crows nest. "Land Ho!"

Rumors

Brotherhood of all fractions is another smoke screen, right? Do RGS has the intention to bring a new era, or built a empire???

Be braver -- you can't cross a chasm in two small jumps.

Q: Is anyone ever across Olympia from north to south yet?

Customer Testamonial on behalf of the First Bank of Provinia

Greetings, Provinians! My name's Jack and I'm clinically insane. I'm not really a trader. I travel Provinia buying and selling the finest opium that I can get hold of. How did I get this great career? The First Bank of Provinia gave me a small-business loan, that's how. They have everything a businessman like myself could need: low-interest rates, high interest loans, warehouse facilities, shipping services... What else could you ask for? And if I don't pay my loans in time they got a solution for that too. Just ask Vinnie 'Fingers' Vincenze - he found out the hard way and ended up floating face down in the Atnos Channel. They also have important , more notorious clients , such as the AOO , the Clan With No Name and the Iron Nation , who all seek world domination.

So take it from me, Jaques et ses Apricots, don't wind up lying in the gutters of Imperial City weaving baskets. Stop by the First Bank of Provinia a call. You'll be glad you did.

When a noble falls in the forest does he make a sound?

If you can't think of anything better to say than: "Water, water everywhere, and still only 25 gold" or "Gold for the needy" or "Ka-ching" then you must have a pretty crappy imagination. Rumors are an important part of Olympian society, don't abuse there usage. The Protectorate of the Sacred Rumor

One final rumor

Pshaw, undead hordes in Tollus...

What's it going to be, then, Greyfletch? Me and my swords, or are you going to get the Hades out of my Territory? Well? What is it?

You Know Who.

The RGS Overlord says let's have a Brotherhood of Factions and all be friends, at last the end to banditry and strife. This is a wonderful idea apart from several tiny flaws:

1) Some of us are sisters - are we disenfranchised already?

2) Some of us are bandits - what do we get out of it?

3) Some of us are independent - why should we submit to RGS domination?

In reply to the riddle posted by the Warriors of Wind:

Well, this was an encouraging turn for the Anti-AOO forces if the three "XXXX" were all separate factions. Assuming such, that puts our bold number at six. Now if we can just get another twenty or thirty factions to join us, we'd be all set. Keep up the spirit and faith in our cause. - XXXX

So if you cross a peasant and a horse, do you get a centaur? And if you cross a centaur and a peasant, what happens?

Water, water everywhere (and an island with monsters I can't attack because I don't have the correct item) and still only 25 gold.

Uh, Crazy Quilters? I was just wondering, I can't avoid your Isle if I don't know where it is. Could you please tell me where it is? I'm not going to do anything like ATTACK IT WITH SWARMS OF DRAGONS BECAUSE I'M SICK OF YOUR STUPID REPETIVE POST EACH AND EVERY WEEK! No, nothing like that. I just want to avoid it that's all. Yes, that's it. so where is it? XXXX ? yeah right, come and get us kids! #

This is not a game. We are serious. We will begin skirmishes in two turns. XXXX
