I think the "speed" idea is good and not too confusing for us players.
But I think you'd want both a "hand-to-hand" and a "missle" speed,
which complicates it a bit. But maybe a single speed number is good

The idea of a ranged combat magic skill is interesting, although it
seems that you'd want it to cost mana (and even that the "speed"
arting would be proportional to the mana invested). I don't know
how this would be made to work for the *defender* however, other
than maybe allowing them to pre-set some default value.
