No doubt the inverse would make them happy to, i.e. use . for continuation
lines.

But I think it's somewhat ugly. And what exactly do you mean by "message"?
A sentence, or all output from the invocation of a command? How would
a sighting report be flagged?

I also suspect that you will break lots of people's turn parsers if this
goes in.
