Hold Thy Peace (Lant)

This page is part of the Ravenscroft Songbook.

The Lant Manuscript is called "KC 1", and is found in the Kings College Library at Cambridge University. It is dated 1580, and is described in this article:

Vlasto, Jill. "An Elizabethan Anthology of Rounds", Musical Quarterly XL (1954) 222-234.

Round mp3

This round is perhaps mentioned in Shakespeare (Twelfth Night, Act II, Scene 3), but there are several rounds featuring the phrase "hold thy peace". This round is simpler than the one in Ravenscroft.

Hold thy peace, Hold thy peace,
Thou knave, (pause) (pause) hold thy peace, (pause) (pause)
(pause) (pause) Thou knave, (pause) (pause) thou knave.
