While the Dominion War may be over, the quadrant is still not a safe place and there are many threats to the Federation to deal with and adventures to be had. The time-tested ship has been upgraded many times, allowing it to remain up to date long after its designers had thought was possible. The flexibility and reliability of the Miranda class, which has enabled it to remain in service for over a century, makes the Portland a perfect ship to serve as a testbed for new technologies.
