Intelligence gathering has failed to determine who the culprit was that summoned them but Lord Sojourner and myself strongly suspect that it is the work of the most recent incarnation of Amadeus the Accursed who is now firmly allied with the vile Jakara. Be advised that travel on the gulf is extremely risky at this time. If this interupts any travel plans you and your family might have made, we are sorry. Complaints may be made to #480 Vile Jakara care of Shyhold (#73). Erin the Fell [1073] surveyed the landscape of Hamish before addressing his company. "Events are few and far between in this land. What we seek may not be found at this time, it at all. Many have heard of the trouble brewing in the Pusan Peninsula and wonder 'why are we here when there is so much to gain there?' Indeed, with the bickering between Jakara and Soujourner not to mention the indiginous population there surely exists all manner of honorable and exciting duties for a Black Company such as ours. And great rewards. It is with this in mind that I now tell you this: If by the end of one more lune we are no closer to attaining our goal at this place then the dawning sun will find us on our way! First we make our way to the Golden City, where some join us, then out across the sea to Pusan! I bid thee, Black Company, to prepare to ride, nay, not ride but fly! For we shall not make our way across the earth by foot or wooden boat, but on the wings of a zephyr!" The wind whipped through and the setting sun cast a last ray of light upon him as his company cheered. He noticed the playful bickering of the fire mage and the water mage as a legion of tiny fiery soldiers were washed away by mini flash flood. His air mage, Dworkin Naugrimm, stood off solemnly as was his usual wont. He stepped down and approached Elidan the All-Seeing. "Cast your eyes about this lune. If you cannot see our goal then none can." "With pleasure commander." Erin returned to his tent and contemplated the news from agents of his in the Golden City. The latest news concerned the upcoming election of mayor. That kind of stay at home job did not entice Erin at all. "Maybe some day I will settle down," he thought. Privately he considered Othag the Protector as the best choice. They had met a few years ago and the man had impressed him greatly. A leader of men, rock solid, even fatherly in a way. Othag was a man one could trust. But as the commander of a Black Company, Erin could not openly support any side. Personal bias is not a well thought of attribute in his trade. Also, recruitment was under way in the Golden City for some units he currently lacked. Taking them on is the primary reason for his trip to the Golden City. Privately he hoped to celebrate Orthag's victory and renew his offer. But he knew the gruff man would not accept. At least he could wish him well. The Golden City. Erin had never been there, being relatively new to this world. He closed off that dangerous line of reflection and went out to join his celebrating men. -- From the Annals of the Black Company of Erin the Fell [1073] Day 364 of the year 3, Ice Death It was a dark and stormy night. But then all of the nights since Zephrys[796] had come to the River of Ice had been dark and stormy. But this night was darker and stormier than any before. The thinly settled region of T'Nyc known as the River of Ice was shrouded in cloud, lifeless air which seemd to sap the strength of even the hardiest of the riverfolk. But it was on such a night, that Sortals, chief elder of the River of Ice, found himself outside the small hut which housed both the greatest menace, and possibly greatest benefit to all of the people. He knocked quietly, and soon the door was opened just long enough for him to squeeze into the room. Sillith, a sly man who worked for Zephrys, had arranged the meeting, led him down some stairs to a basement room Sortals didn't even know existed. Sortals noticed a strange smell about the place, and wondered how they managed to get a herd of 1,000 camels in such a small hut. The final door opened slowly, and Sortals saw a tall man in white robes floating gently in the air. A steady breeze blew fresh air into the room from a small shaft at the far end. The smell was much better in here, Sortals noticed. "Do you have the money?" asked Sortals. Zephrys nodded and a small chest, blown by a strong wind, moved across the floor. Sortals opened it and stared, greed eating at his heart. 10,000 sp. All for him. He quickly threw down the paper he brought, hefted the enormous chest, and left the room. Zephrys grinned. He opened the paper and read. "We, the people of the River of Ice, do hereby acknowledge Zephrys as our Ruler and Lord, to follow in times of plenty and need, power and poverty, as long as he shall rule with fair hand and glad heart. Sortals, Ambreck, Devon, Elders, River of Ice." Zephrys grinned. Then laughed. And the storms ceased. Dinner, that was what was important at the moment. Coralon Cheryllon [887] had never been one to be short sighted, but after the month long journey to his new assignment here in Losif, he had developed quite an appetite for a home-cooked meal. Thus, the first thing that was tested in Losif wasn't the government, wasn't the armies, wasn't the agricultural stability but instead the food at the local tavern. The nip in the air wasn't much to most people, but after working in a warmer climate for the past year, it was noticable. Losif seemed to be a positive enough assignment. Maybe more of a promotion than a lateral move after all. Now that Sojourner wanted to handle things around Ryvwy on his own, Coralon was sent to a different province to work as governor, which can often mean a move to the most backwater place. Since his governorship of Quil had been a bit hampered by Jakara's 1000 soldiers in the Blue Infantry, Coralon had a reason to be a little nervous about the move to Losif. It wasn't that Coralon had preformed poorly in managing Quil, just that it had been a particularly bad time to take over as governor. Having had no experience with provinces, being a military man, it was a new way of thinking. Having Jakara tear in didn't help much either. All in all, Quil had been a good experience and it was fortunate that Lord Sojourner agreed. His first look around the province's cities and at the administration already governing it, was assuring to the travel weary Coralon Cheryllon. Being this close to the Golden City could be advantagous, provided the new mayor gets things there under control. This war with Jakara is taken away from the heart of the land, the Golden City is shaping up, the Winter looks to be mild, the province is doing well and the local gruel was excellant. It was just a matter of opening up good trade routes with the rich provinces and cities near by and keeping the province itself clear from the violence of far away Pusan Penisula. A little luck and this could be an easy job...but then when has there ever been such a thing? Damnell Shiresire [612] Steward to Coralon Cheryllon [887] THE BALLAD OF CINDOR As I sat in a tavern at the close of the day, In the city of Eastport, near the docks of the bay, A cocky young ruffian was bragging his way in the graces of a barmaid named Fae. "By trade I'm a buglar, a dipper, a theif, a reliever of excess when the rich need relief. And I'm the best, my lassie, I know and I'll bet I'm the smoothest and smartest that you've ever met. Be it necklace or ring you'd like me to lift Just give me a nod and it's yours for a gift. In Bern, Bath, or Ni, the Capital or Rvywy there's no safe that's safe in any big City. I steal from the richest and laugh in their faces. There's no match for me in any of those places. Demons in Shyhold, and Chardian Mystics Barbarians, Dwarves, all know my statistics. I say with certainty there's never been better nor will there be, not now or not ever." Now I'm not the sort who seeks out disaster, but this young buck's boasts were more than I could master. I took a long pull of ale to wet down my ire and stated "My boy, of you I do tire. It's clear to those who have seen more years that a pup like yourself's still wet behind the ears I don't say your no good, you've prob'bly got talent, but there's one that is better, if I may be so gallant." The ruffian smiled as if I were a fool, kicked back his beverage, put his feet on a stool. "I can tell from your eyes, old sot, that some long story you've got. But go ahead tell me and Fae a tale, If's good enough I'll buy you an ale." I handed my empty to the bartender and said "Son, now this ain't fiction I'll rendor, and it will humble your soul be hear the ballad of Cindor. Today there are few who were at the begining when no one was rich, when no one was winning. Molgar, Kosar, zotar, Zephers and Zorn, Shay Tolin, Darkstar, Orthag, Rhombus weren't born. Jack Shadow, Jakara, are pups by compare. Why the grey mage Sojourner was not even there. From there very begining only three souls remain. The third was King Regis though his spirits wane; the second Lord Thimark with barbarian mane. But before them both, (you can tell by his number) Cindor, the thief, awoke from the slumber. Now Cindor is stealth and certain deception, the City of Gold was his place of reception. His face lit with joy he cried out with zeal: 'my name is Cindor. I want something to steal' And steal he did , all the silver he wanted, day in and day out, like a man that was haunted. But he tired of silver and he creid out to god: 'I've got all this skill, but there's nothing to rob.' In the blackness of boredom he subverted the town, so when Regis persuaded it came easily round. Thus began the realm as we know it with Regis on top and Cindor below it. Then came an event which would shape all of History The Throne of the Empire, once shouded in Mystery, had been found - And brought to Regis's Palace. With the Imperial guard over five hundred strong no ordinary mortal could do Regis wrong. For how could a man penetrate the guard remove the throne and go unharmed? Good Question. No man knows to this day how it was done, but Cindor did it, and with it did run. 'Now how and where does one run with a throne?' you may ask 'it's big and it's bulky. Impossible to mask. No man could do it.' But Cindor acomplished the task. Reports came in from far and from near 'the Throne was last seen there and then here.' Amadeus said he saw it. Xarn wanted reward. Regis swore revenge by fire and sword. Kosar claims he knows, while Twilkip only laughs and the grey mage Sojourner consults all his maps. Jakara covets it. Regis pines away. And Cindor's kept his secret until this very day.W So you'd half to admit young fellow, you, The theft of a throne is something you'll never do. And as old as Cindor is, he's still the best. So buy me my ale and let the matter rest." With a wink to the girl he bought the next round and said "Ole man you drink that one down. T'was a good tale, your ale's much deserved." and he laughed long and soft as the ale was served. then he moved real close and he said in a whisper. "But you've told me what I already know, Mister." I suddenly noticed the lines round the eyes, the grey of the hair, his diminutive size. He winked as he saw that I understood. "Just tricks of the trade, so hush if you would. This wench likes 'em young, and knows not from any throne so she'd not care for Cindor as old as he's grown." I gulped at my grog and groped for a rhyme and sat beside Cindor, the greastest thief of all time. "Ahh..." he sighed as he hunched forward in his saddle. He peered at the horizon. A bleak cold wind blew up upon him. Horses whinnied around him. It was good to be travelled with the Doom Forgers again. "Fie and Die Sojourner, my accursed master." This oath gave Twilkip comfort. He curled up his thrice scarred lip and swallowed another long draught once again. He leaned back in his saddle in order to be able to get an even longer draught. He lost his balance and toppled out of his saddle. "God damned horse! Stupid old animal! I told you that if you ever did that again I'da slit yur gizzard!" Twilkip screamed as he drew his sword and advanced upon the horse. The horse whinnied fearfully and galloped away at full speed. Twilkip sped after the horse, slashing at the air. Doom Finder, Captain of the Doom Forger's came between him and the horse. "Please sir! Don't do it! The men are already half suspicious that you're mad! Don't confirm it for them by going off and killing your steed in drunken anger!" Twilkip glared at the man. He began to cry. Great hot tears rolling down his cheeks. He bagan to bawl in shame. "I'm sorry Doom. I'm sorry. I can't seem to stop drinking. No one listens to me anymore. I'm not a success. All I want in the world is to be successful. All I want is to be good at what I do and be respected as a great leader among men!" "There, there Twilkip. You serve, as all men do." Doom said comforting Twilkip. "Now be a man and compose yourself. The men are counting on you. At least pretend to lead, even if you really can't fulfill that function for them." Twilkip wiped the tears from his face. He straightened up his garments and got back on Doom Finder's horse. Doom Finder dismounted and retrieved Twilkip's horse. After calming down the horse, Doom Finder permitted Twilkip to remount his stallion. Petulantly, when no one was watching, Twilkip kicked his horse with his spurs. He enjoyed the horses ensuing rage as the horse bucked and he got to quite it with his great heavy mass. The sense of domination and mastery over those weaker than he filled Twilkip with glee. "I could do this forever", he thought as he repeated the manuever. A few days passed. One morning while Twilkip was making the rounds of the camp, bellowing at random men for invented slights a cloud of dust began to form before him. At first Twilkip thought it was a dust devil, or the trick of the camps air mage, so he ignored it. A moment later a voice hissed bhind him: "Twwwwwillllkippp!" Twilkip turned. The dust ball had materialized into a great black, mass with hot red eyes that glared at him. The smell of sulfer and brimstone irritated his nostrils. "Stand back demon! I am the great slayer of demons and undead, Twilkip Thimark the Dark Twilkip scurried away, drawing his sword and hiding behind a rock. "And I am your Master, Sojourner the Sorcerous! Do not make me angry! Your jokes amuse me only so far!" "Master!" Twilkip fell to his knees, first making sure no one was watching. Somehow, no one was present in the camp to see this display. "Do not worry, worm, I have sent them all away, so that they may not see the debased creature that you truly are! The truth will be kept only between the two of us!" Twilkip quivered with relief. "Thank you, Master." Humility welled up within Twilkip. Instantly it was followed by anger and humiliation. Here he was! Twilkip Thimark the Dark, a great Necromancer and general reduced to begging! How he would get Sojourner one day! He released the image of Sojourner begging for mercy and cowering and sniveling the way he was always forced to in his master's presence. How he wished he had access to what his master did! How he envied and admired the suave certainty with which his master lived his life! It was inconceivable that any human being could have the strength of will and fortitude that Sojourner did! He would enjoy killing him one day! "Such thoughts waste your time, Twilly. You will never realize them so why do you entertain delusions! Better that you should commit yourself to the task at hand, rather than fantasies!", the cloud interrupted Twilkip's angry reverie. "Master! I was thinking of the end I would met out to the Caliph and his ally Jakara the Damned! I..." Twilkip blurted as he sniveled. He could not bring himself to meet his master's eyes. His master's way of knowing his every thought and intention was another point that he would have to punish him for that too... "Twilkip! Pay attention! My time is more valuable than your!" "Yes, master, infinitely more valuable." "Good that you know that. Many others work for me as well. I am a master of many tricks and devious concoctions that I use to get my way! You are a worm and cur. I could snuff you the way I crush the will of one of my pet demons!" "MMMmmmm..." Twilkip whimpered. The idea of being crushed and bound was well within Sojourner's power and Twilkip knew it. "How the bully dreads his own medicine!", the cloud howled, "Here is what I need from you! You are to take the forces that I have entrusted to you and annihilate the Caliph's forces on the Pusan peninsula! There are to be no survivors! I have predicted and assayed that the Caliph's forces will be found in the province of Ancalme on the 44th day of this upcoming year! Do not return without accomplishing this deed! I have spoken!" The cloud hissed and bellowed, blowing away as the final words were spoken, leaving maniacal laughter dancing in the wind. Twilkip lay behind the boulder quivering in shame and fear for an hour as the day grew cold. A battle! Death! He might die! Ye Gods! What was he to do? Next: The Battle is Joined: Glory to the Forces of Justice! Lady Eastport (739) sighed reflectively when she heard the news from the Golden City. The bittersweet memories flooded back at the mention of Orthag (1112). It had been many years since she had last seen him, lonely years, years full of strife and challenge. The tear that had been about to fall was wiped away as her eyes grew steely and focused on the azure gem of telepathy she held. "Attention, Lords and Ladies of Entynchardia! I, Lady Eastport, Protector of Eastport and the surrounding land wish to speak with all who hold an interest in the fate of our collected land. An unprecedented event of great import is upon us now. The election of a Mayor for the Golden City is arguably the most important political event to happen this year. The results will have great ramifications upon the livelihoods and security of all the lands we own. No longer will be at the whims of rulers whose inbred affectations made the power of the Golden City a joke. Now is the time to choose a strong leader, one who can lead the Golden City and all of Entynchardia back to the economic prosperity we once had. Having known Orthag the Protector for many years, I can vouch for his strength of character and committment to whatever cause he espouses. I know he would be the best ruler for the Golden City. I realize that some of you disagree with me, and I accept that. No matter which candidate you select, I urge you to use whatever influence you have in the Golden City to support the candidate of your choice. The results of this election will be far-reaching, and affect us all. Thank you for your time and attention." As Lady Easport held the fading gem, her thoughts went back many years. For a moment, she considered contacting Orthag himself, but after a moment, cursing herself for her weakness, she put away the gem, pocketing her memories with it. DEBATE: Round 1 Questions, answer from Darkstar, Rebutals from Orthag Greetings, my Lords and Ladies. It is with relish and a sigh of relief that I finally get to repond to these questions put forth by the people of the Golden City. I am, of course, open to speak further on any of my statements to any of the concerned citizens. >Question number one: What will be your top priority as mayor? Top priority will be restoration of the city. This will involve both internal work handling the administration of the city, and exterior, among the fields on Yelf and Tornay. Additional to this task is the safety of the citizens, which will require military units. As I have already stated, these units will and must have secondary skills to support their existance while they are not needed in their gaurd functions. [This is very good, but I would not like the citizens of the Golden City [to be governed by someone who does not recognize the need to protect [one's people from magical attacks. As I have said before, the Golden [City must also develop troops with mystical talents to complement it's [conventional forces. -- Orthag. >Question two: The outlaw Jakara, who only a year ago was burning >our fair city to the ground- claiming the G.C. was too powerful for there >to ever be political balance between ourselves and the rest of the world- >recently has been giving lip service to declaring a truce, and claims to >want to join in the democratic process of our city and be given a both >vote and run his "people" for office. What is your reaction to this? I see this as relatively simple. From current information, personnel from within the camp of Jakara are not plentiful within the City, unless they are among the entities currently within prisoner status, which, according to the rules previously put forth, discounts them from voting. Yes, it is possible for him to move personnel towards the city, but it seems that Jakara and Sojourner are at logerheads, and will not pass any of the others forces in their respective directions. This, of course, is between the two of them, as they represent two of the major opponents within the world at this time. Also, the general oppinion within the City with regards to Jakara and his people is more than of slight animosity, which would tend towards keeping them away from the even far proximity of the City walls. As such, I do not believe it possible for Jakara to run for office, or to even take part in the voting. Especially since his general area of holdings are far away across the Tyrean Sea! [Mr. Franklin, I think, has failed to answer the real question here. The [question does not hinge on whether Jakara or any of Jakara's entities [are physically able to make it to our city, but if they should be allowed [a place in our democratic system. Hedging the question is a tried and [true political method of which I take no part. -- Orthag. >Question three: Just recently a major police action has broken out on the >pusan penisula between Lord Sojourner and Jakara. Many citizens feel that >Sojourner is guilty of the same imperialist agression that he has so >sharply criticized Jakara for. What is your Feeling? What we have here is two opposing viewpoints come to conflict. Both sides have reached a like level of carnage. From discussions with each, the common theme of 'preventing the other side in taking over' has been very evident. The inhabitants of the Peninsula are, of course, suffering from the excessive combat going on. Personally, I favor having both factions withdraw from the area, and having third party interests move into the area and bring the land back to fertility. [Who would these third parties be? Who will decide? How much better off [will the people of the Pusan Peninsula be being exploited by a third party. [Mr. Franklin is not solving the problem here, which is imperialism, merely [advocating alternate imperialists. -- Orthag. >Question four: Both honorable candidates have been relatively unknown >before the anouncement of their candidacy. Infact, Franklin Darkstar has >been called "a mere pawn of the dying Westar council that is seeking to >regain stature by controling the mayoralship," and Orthag the Protecter >has been refered to as "a mere youth who wouldn't know an agricultural >support level from an economic status report." How would each of you >respond, respectively to this comments? Yes, I have maintained a quiet mein within the known world, prefering to be left to my tasks, which are of building and health. When I first entered into the reponsibilities of being a Lord and leader of the common people, I received and accepted an invitation to join the Westar Council, which was a simple group gathered together to seek protection in common support from the rages that were taking place at the time. I was not a major member, and took little part of the actions that some of the Council engaged in. The Westar Council preformed it's function, in some areas to well. A few of it's members have risen into power in the vacuum that occured when the Council started breaking up from having to many members to function. I myself withdrew from the Council, and only by happenings not within my control were any of my people even connected with actions that took place withing the last nine lunes. I have kept content with the task of trying to restore Rye and Bath to health, both areas having suffered major rape and pillage in the terror that caused the Council to form in the first place. For those citizens that might be concerned, I was given Lordship of Rye by the now deceased Dominic elHalyn Hastur, this on the eve of his death in the efforts to rid the lower Pusan area of the scourge known as Roy Batty. Since that time, I have only worked within the province, keeping close ties with the nearby capitol. I have not built with conquest in mind, as many have done in the long and sad past since the Dark King wars. My opponent is of even less public showing than I. I have been open to public view, while my opponent has only been recently noticed to even exist. At least I have had the experience of learning the necessary lessons of sucessful rulership. I have seen the terrible effects of someone that does not know what goes about maintaining an economy, and what it does to the poor innocents that must stand under such poor rulership. Instead of fumbling around trying to learn the hard way, despite what havoc is wrecked upon the hapless people, exactly what needs to be done, I can immediatly begin positive and constructive efforts in the name of the citizens of the City. [According to Mr. Franklin, a reputation for associating with questionable [characters is much better than no reputation at all. I have nothing to [prove or justify in my past, only things to prove and justify in the [future, a future I wish to devote to the Golden City. -- Orthag. >Question five: What would you do to increase interchardian trade? Protection of the trade routes is a must to accomplish this. Therefore, units of gaurds will be formed and trained, such that can be assigned upon request to merchants leaving the city, and may even be posted within allied cities, if their lords request such outposts. Communication with the inhabitants of Runesward in Chardia has been established, in addition to the already existing communication lines to the cities of the main continent, Pusan Peninsula, and the Silver Isles. It is an obvious fact that the City would, itself, be in the forefront of this new wave of trade, therefore supplying a boost from the fair City to the Entichardian world economy. [I applaud Mr. Franklins good sense to protect traders and develop trade [routes. Have I not been advocating this very thing all along? [-- Orthag. >Question six: What are your feelings about the aging and sick monarch >Regis Truthwalker remaining in the palace? What would we be like if we turned out every sick, aged, or tired citizen of the Empire? Life, and it's struggle, would have no meaning, if you were to be turned out and basically exposed to the elements to die upon reaching retirement age. Regis, at one time, did a great deal for the Golden City and it's surrounding area. He would be welcome to reside in happiness within his own spacious appartments, respected and heard when spoken. Evidence that Regis can still show wisdom is seen in the capable handling of the Royal holdings by his appointees. [Agreed. The elderly are our most cherished natural resource. We can [always benefit from there wisdom. Remember that each and everyone of [us wishes to grow old and be respected. -- Orthag. >Question seven: (This from our frivolous female contingent) How tall are > you, and where do you get your hair cut? Ladies of the realm: I am of 6'1" height. My hair, of recent years, has been barbered by skilled local talent, who have been mightly trying to get me to try something different than the basic military field cut that I received in the ten years of my active duty with the armies of the Empire. If I might be so bold as to request, please make note that my dear and honored parents christened me with the name of Darkstar, for the crown of black hair I was born with. I assume that it was just a simple copying error that caused my name to be reversed in the publication of the Times. Thank you, citizens, for your time. May your minds be clear when you consider who should be selected to administer to the City, come election time. Darkstar Franklin DEBATE round 1 questions, Orthag's answers, no responses I would like to preface my responses to this poll by firstly thanking the diligent people involved in this election process for taking time out from their busy schedules to come up with these well thought out questions. No one has done more in the interests of this great city than they in quite some time. We owe them a hearty thanks! >Question number one: What will be your top priority as mayor? As I have stated before so shall I state again. My top priority as Mayor of the Golden City will be two-fold. Firstly economic prosperity must be ensured by increasing the agricultural production of Yelf and Tornay and increasing the amount of trade between the Golden City and other provinces. Secondly, but just as important, the citizens and their welfare must be protected from foreign invasions and internal strife. The military, both conventional and mystical, must be developed to achieve this end. My reaction is simple. The only people entitled to join in the democratic process of our city are the inhabitants. However, if Jakara or any other sees our economic and social welfare and wishes to partake then he needs only relinquish all other ties and become a citizen. Then he faces the awesome task of convincing the people and the powers that be of his good faith. The people will not be fooled. >Question three: Just recently a major police action has broken out on the >pusan penisula between Lord Sojourner and Jakara. Many citizens feel that >Sojourner is guilty of the same imperialist agression that he has so >sharply criticized Jakara for. What is your Feeling? I'm not going to lower myself to the level of Jakara and others by throwing about emotionally charged accusations. Imperialist aggression is a simple tag for a complex political, social, and economic process. It is my opinion that the inhabitants of the Pusan Peninsula should be presented with both ideologies and then allowed to reach their own conclusions. That my illustrious opponent is in fact "a mere pawn of the dying Westar Council" has occured to me and I have given it much thought. I have concluded that even if he is a "pawn", it makes no real difference. The "dying Westar Council" is just that: dying! If the people are willing to forgive a man his past indiscretions and mistakes then that is most noble, but this should not be the basis for making such an important decision on the fate of the Golden City. The suggestion that I am "a mere youth" is, of course, preposterous! It is true that I am relatively new to the area but that is merely due to the fact that I have been traveling the world for some time. I was born in the Golden City forty two years ago next lune. In my travels I have experienced many things and learned about life by doing, not by hearing about it. It is true that, unlike my illustrious opponent, I am not a retired lieutenant but rather an accomplished general and statesman. Is it the wish that the new mayor be an old and feeble dotard? What would be the use of this? I have many years ahead of me, gods willing, that I might offer the use of to the inhabitants of this grand city. >Question five: What would you do to increase interchardian trade? I already have decent relations with the lord of Hamish and Eastport and will endeavor to form other such relations with provinces throughout the free world. I will have city sponsored traders develop trade routes. Also I will put stern laws into effect that will protect traders and other innocents from having their goods and livelihoods plundered by brigands. >Question six: What are your feelings about the aging and sick monarch >Regis Truthwalker remaining in the palace? It appears as though the regent Twilkip Thimark the Dark is capable of managing the many responsibilities that, unfortunately, Regis Truthwalker is no longer capable of. Therefore I see no reason to remove Regis from the palace. He is, after all, our monarch and we owe him a great deal. >Question seven: (This from our frivolous female contingent) How tall are > you, and where do you get your hair cut? I am always happy to please the female contingent, whom I would never consider as frivolous. I am 6'4". As I have been in the field for quite a few years now I have been getting all my haircuts from one of my aides, whom I might add is getting quite good! Yours Truly, Orthag the Protector. P.S. Due to technical difficulties this was not published in the latest newsletter. Our gallant election officials have seen fit to ensure that the citizens get to hear my views by publishing a special bulletin. My hearty thanks to them. Also, it seems that my opponent still wishes to posture mightly and slander me. It is my opinion that one such as he is fit to govern only over a city of braggarts, brigands, and liars! As the Golden City is neither, I urge you to vote for me next lune. --O Debate: Round 1, Darkstars responses to Orthag's statement In answer to your claims, Orthag: Exactly what experience have you had as a mayor or governor? What would you know of running a province or city? Can the Golden City afford to let you take your schooling on the job? Further, what experience have you had with trade? Have you had your socks taken off yet because you took too long in getting something to its market? Have you yet gotten the experience of worrying over what a commodity will bring in its correct market? Have you had the common sense of posting factors in the markets you participate in, and have caravaneers transport the stuff between the erstwhile merchants in the system? In general, at least, (and with relief!) we find ourselves reasonably in agreement with respect to the powerful Jakara. How will you view someone invading a territory, or attacking someone in passing? At least you recognize that the question is sensitive. A pawn, eh? Perhaps, if you feel such, you would like to meet out on the plains outside the city? Yes, the Council has broken up, but you should know that many strong ties formed in that meeting have lasted beyond the dismissal of that famed meeting. Youth. Exactly. What experience have you had with this existence? What REAL experience? And a general? Mayhap of your household troops. In my years in the field, I lived and shared with my troopers, instead of staying back in the rear areas, where it is safe, except for those who would advance themselves by currying favor, instead of on their accomplishments. Several times, I had turned down the 'chance' of being so promoted, instead preferring the honest life as a real, and capable, officer. Let us hear what age you enlisted in the forces? Did you earn your way into the ranks of the officer grades, or were you 'given' your rank? Did you enlist at an early age, and work your way up on the blood you shed for this fair land, and on the valor of those deeds you performed? It is good that you have made it out as far as the city of Eastport. Have you, or any of your minions, made it out further? Have you, or those deep within your trust, made it as far, say, as Runewsard? Or, perhaps, even the ravaged city of Sudabuk? Nay, so far as those cities among the Silver Isles? Go, puppy, and learn about trade. The hard way. Yes, you leave Regis content within his apartments. You try to bother the retired statesman, and many within the city will be more than slightly upset. And, excuse me ladies... I repeat, WHERE in the field? In Yelf and Tornay? Darkstar Franklin Debate: Round 2 Revised Statement and amplified responses Greetings, my Lords and Ladies. May your minds be clear when you consider who should be selected to administer to the City, come election time. Darkstar Franklin -- "Press" -- R.A.I.D.S. CONDITION OF TWILKIP WORSENS Despite the valiant efforts of the royal physicians, Twilkip Thimark's condition continues to steadily worsen. Regent's Acquired Idiot's Disease Syndrome (aka RAIDS), the uncurable disease of the Royal family and the rulers of the empire, appears ready to claim its latest victim. The disease has 4 stages before death sets in. In the 1st stage the victim develops delusions of grandeur. In the 2nd stage the victim begins to lose control of his faculties and in the 3rd stage he becomes paranoid. In the 4th stage the victim becomes a babbling idiot and is usually put out of his misery or confined to a home with the other idiots. Currently the Royal Palace is being used to hold the 4th stage victims. The royal physicians have had little success controlling RAIDS in the acting regent. Research experts on thedisease suspect that a genetic flaw in the character of Twilkip may account for his rapid deteriation. Only one year ago did he 1st manifest signs of the deadly desease. Withing months of spending time with Regis he began to show signs of stage 1 RAIDS. Marching throughout the lands leading illusionary troops he began to bully the poor peasantry. Regis fearing for the life of his loved one gave him the damned Doom Forgers to protect him. (Some say Regis was already mad; others say he loved Twilly; what is known is thathe feared for his lover and gave him his best unit to protect him.) With real troops to support him Twilkip seems to have immediately slipped into stage 2 RAIDS condition. At this time Twilkip took his band of brigands on the road and began pillaging and raping throughout the countryside. Shortly thereafter he lost complete control of his faculties and without cause he attacked the Caliph and Jakara. Right was on the side of the Lords of the East and Twilkip's marauding bands of brigands were driven back. After brooding over his defeats the mad regent seems to have quickly slipped into stage 3 RAIDS. Paranoia, totally out of control, the demented Twilkip stormed into the beautiful Cape of Summer last month looking for the Caliph. Furious at not finding the lords of the East he pillaged the beautiful province before returning to the darkened city to brood some more. Only stage 4 remains and physicians fear that before long the disease will have claimed another regent. Experts on the course of the disease expect that Twilkip will soon be confined to the palace with Regis. The two of them can then babble all day at each other and hopefully leave everyone else alone. The question that remains unanswered is whether to burn the palace with all its victims and hopefully eradicate the disease before anyone else is raped by Twilkip or bar the palace and enclose its victims there forever and hope the disease dies out. Stewards of the city, tired of years of tyranny from Twilkip and Regis, are expected to recommend burning the palace to the ground. Unfortunately, Twilkip's band of brigands may defend their sickened lord. Perhaps Jakara and the Caliph will send aid. One can only hope they see the plight the City is in and have pity on its victims. From : Economic Management Office, Bath, Rye Re : Winter Passover To : Head Office, Economic Management, Golden City Date : 364/3 Cc : Gov. Hale (412), Rye The futures market has seen a serious upswing, what with an influx of new settlers in the farming regions of the province. The new additions to the farmers workforce harbors a drastic increase in the amount of acreage put back under cultivation. In other areas, the announcement of an actual race for the Mayorship of the Golden City has brought on the expected rush of incoming commodities, and the reciprocal increase of production within the markets in Bath. Such has been the upswing that not all of the cities products have found buyers, and a surplus is forseen. Advertisments for trading companies to come and partake of this stockpile have been initiated, and will soon be into release. Stefen Haldane Economic Advisor, Bath Office Jobi swore under his breath as he carefully extracted his mud soaked trousers from the rain filled trench. The fact that he was currently wearing the trousers at the time made the matter all the more irritating. Swearing again -- a little louder this time -- as he tried to brush the moist clay from his seat. He succeded only in smearing his hands and coating his trousers all the more thoroughly. His only saving grace, thought Jobi, was that it was so early in the morning that the first hint of sunlight had not even begun to break apart the heavy mist which habitually hung about the castle yard throughout the winter months. Abandoning his attempts to remove the mud, the young stable boy returned to the matter at hand which had prompted him -- so early in the morning -- to leave the warm comfort of his loft bed and venture forth into the damp, chilly winter mist. His complaining bladder now relieved, Jobi turned to hurry back to the comfort of his bedding. He would have too ... had he not caught sight of a tall, robed figure gliding silently and smoothly -- as if it's feet never touched the ground -- across the open expanse of the castle yard. Covered from head to foot in a thick, greyish mantle, the figure would have remained a mystery to the poor mud besotted lad had it not been for a momentary breeze that blew back a corner of the ominous beings cloak, revealing the faint glow of the Sorceror's jewel tipped staff. Cowering behind a nearby stack of lumber, Jobi watched in a mixture of awe and anticipation as the silent figure paused for a moment before the darkend archway that led -- or so the lad had been told by some of the older boys in the yard -- to the abandoned west wing of the castle. Two more figures emerged and approached the first. They spoke briefly and then, all together, they lifted up into the air and before Jobi could finish gawking at the incredible nature of this site, the three figures were gone -- soaring over the parapet walls and out towards the open sea beyond. As Jobi slowly made his way back to the comfort of his loft, he wondered at what great and urgent matter must be afoot that it should rouse his lord and master from his studies and send him flying out across the Western Tyre at such an early hour. For, as long as Jobi had been here, attending the stable master, he had never heard even a rumour that Lord Sojourner had stirred forth from his seemingly eternal studies a top the northern tower. Whatever the matter may be, Jobi, assured himself, I can be certain it doesn't concern me. Or at least -- the Good Lady be praised -- I certainly hope it doesn't. ************************** Announcement *************************** To: The citizens of The Golden City From: Orthag, the Protector I have come across a copy of a secret letter sent out to various powerful individuals from my noted opponent, Darkstar Franklin. >My opponent, Orthag, would like to campaign using slurs, accusations, >and such. I would rather not. All of the campaigning I have done has been in this public forum. I have not and will not engage in the wispering of slanderous statements behind my opponents back. >Instead of grandiose promises, let me simply state this. >I am really a 1st Lt. in the North Dakota National Gaurds. I have some >expierence at warefare. Yes, over the summer, I placed my playership in >temporary charge of another player, with intentions of playing via remote >via snail-mail. However, the army nicely squashed those plans by, as >usual, changing things around on me when I got to my chosen tech school >for the summer. If my promises have been grandiose then that is only because my city and yours, the Golden City demands grandiose actions! As for the rest of this, I fail to see the relevance. >I currently hold the province Rye, and the City Bath, and have been >engaged in solely building up their economic states. I am not a power- >monger, I am not severly land hungry, and I am protective about the lands >that I currently administer to. I am willing to place my characters life >on the line, in order to defend what is now becoming a non-poor status >area, having recovered from the ravages and pillaging of various skeletal >and demonic and mundane forces. I am sure that the populace of the Golden City has no desire to be ruled by a foreign lord. If so, should we invite Jakara to administer to us? I empathize with the problem of protecting one's land from invaders as do all of our fine citizens. >What I intend to do with the Golden City, if I should be elected Mayor. >First and foremost, restore it to it's extravagant past, both in general >apparent wealth, and in population. I would wish the GC to be a place >where entities can earn a decent living, without fear of sudden crushings >by maurading forces. Now, I cannot promise that surprise attacks will >not happen, because they do. However, I will maintain sufficient >military forces to reply to any such attacks, mostly in the garrison >state. It would be my policy that these forces, while being of a >neccessity highly skilled in military matters, would also be either >self-sufficient for upkeep, or would also have a minor skill such that >they would assist in the maintaining and increasing of the Golden Cities >exalted status. Not only would I term these 'grandiose' but I would also term them 'nebulous.' This is an election for the office of mayor not a beauty pageant where one need only please the eye and mouth trivial goals such as "I would like to bring peace to the world." >That is it. I dont want to go crazy. I only want to work. That is all >I have ever done since I started in on re-organizing and re-building the >province Rye some time ago. Hard work is indeed a balm to the soul. >I leave it up to you. Indeed, you the people of this city must in the end decide. >Yours, >Darkstar Franklin (706) >1st Lt. Royal Army (ret) > I would like to add that I really regret that Mr. Franklin has somehow taken offense at my campaigning tactics. If I am elected to this post I should hope that he and I can cast aside these differences and work in conjunction to the benefit of both our peoples! Sincerely Orthag, the Protector [1112]
