Information gathering is a big piece of a lot of PBMs, and there are
players who excel at that... and not necessaily other things. I see no
reason to view someone's efforts at keeping tabs on things as simply
tools and not a way to play. I don't in general, so I find allies who do.

Besides, there are ways to shroud the location (magical fog), allowing
one to hide troop movements in and out.

Which is pointless now, but such deceptions are the heart of how great
strategies worked--because things can be hidden in the real world, or
made to look other than they are.
