Green Crater Weyr is situated just off the coast of the Southern Continent of Pern on an island completely made up of the remains of a once active volcano and set in the final months before the beginning of the Eighth Pass of the Red Star. Founded by a small group of rebellious riders who held the leadership of their Northern Weyr in contempt and left to found their own Weyr to prove their point, Green Crater is still trying to get on their feet and prepare for the inevitable onslaught of Thread. Unlike Glasena Weyr, who shares Southern, has had five Turns to prepare and is sanctioned by the Weyrs of the north, Green Crater is learning to be self-sufficient because it has no choice. The Weyrs of the north express at best, a distant contempt for Green Crater and its renegade Weyr leadership; at worst, it is outright animosity. Most of the Major Holds and CraftHalls have adopted a wait and watch ideal, most not wanting to raise the ire of the Weyrs as the Red Star looms larger in the sky. Glasena Weyr, while not actively against Green Crater on principal, has far too many woes of its own to actively assist the struggling Weyr.

Without support from the proper channels Green Crater has been forced to be creative -- welcoming any and all who come seeking a haven regardless of their past or rank, actively seeking to establish trading relationships, learning to feed and house themselves in whatever fashion works best, and sometimes even fostering relationships with those that the Weyrs and Holds of Northern hold in equal contempt. Anyone with skills is welcome, and even the lowest drudges will find themselves listened to and appreciated. Though there are no official Holds nor Crafthalls to protect, the dragonriders of Green Crater hold the oath they took tightly to their hearts - dragonmen must fly when Thread is in the sky! Green Crater has staked out the territory it will defend, and so long as their riders have breath in their bodies, protect it they will.

Wings are being organized from among the bare handfuls of experienced riders, and any competent rider has a fair shot at being named Wingleader or Second. The remote location has led few to our door and any that do arrive are immediately made welcome, from raw apprentice to venerated master, to unskilled drudges wishing to find someplace to prove themselves worthy of something more, to those wishing a better chance at Impressing at the smaller Weyr. No one is turned away

Officially considered a 'Rogue Weyr' by the Northern Weyrs, Green Crater is a haven for all those that have been black listed, banished or who, for reasons of their own have chosen to leave. Here everyone is welcomed and hard questions aren't asked. Started by Goldrider Embry and Bronzerider K'vish along with a small group of supporters, the Weyr has grown slowly from a few riders to a thriving population of riders, crafters and anyone else up for the challenge of carving a new life out of the Southern Jungles.
