Description

Heaven's Gate - or simply Starbase 73 - is a defensive outpost set in a contested region of space to protect a Federation planet, which is known by many names to the native. The most common name as the Federation will soon learn is Purgatory. Purgatory is inhabited by a pre-starfaring society with a small population. The Federation has named it as a Protectorate, but the claim is contested by the Z'kathi.

Life on the Station is similar to Star Trek's DS9 or Babylon 5 (though not as shady). There are Fleet personnel, civilians, even families. Starbase 73 has repair facilities for Fleet and alien vessels, a Trade Sector, entertainment, and more. The place was built to survive an assault. And it has a small fleet to guard it. Travel to Purgatory is highly restricted. Unless you are on an official Away team assigned to go there, you probably won't make it down there. And news about the planet is mostly classified. The Federation has plans to terraform the planet eventually. However, plans may have changed.

This setting is similar to Star Trek in the fact that there is a Star Fleet with a very similar organization and purpose. However, the technology and races has progressed differently. The largest difference will be a lack of matter energy transmission technology. This means no transporters. Replicators will be based on nanotechnology. And holodecks won't be near as realistic. There are neural induction based virtual rooms for recreation and education. Or there are actual gymnasiums and even terrarium parks on Heaven's Gate. (Yes, I love the holodecks of Star Trek, but I am trying to follow a logical technological development.) The year is 2308.
