Description

FAR HORIZONS is a strategic role-playing game of galactic exploration, trade, diplomacy, and conquest. The first and second editions were designed for play by postal mail. Later editions were designed for play by electronic mail. The seventh edition rules and source code were released in 1999 by Rick Morneau.

At the start of a game, each player controls an intelligent species and the home planet on which it lives. As the game progresses, you can explore nearby regions of the galaxy and establish colonies. As you range farther and farther from home, you will encounter other intelligent species. These encounters can be hostile, neutral, or friendly, depending on the participants. Interstellar war is a distinct possibility.

After more than a decade FAR HORIZONS is being revived for the latest generation of gamers under the banner Far Horizons: The Awakening. The primary goal of this project is to renew interest in this fantastic PBEM game, by running regular games of Far Horizons when demand calls for it.

A secondary goal of this project is to develop a game program for players with a graphical user interface. This client will enable users to load their turn reports, survey the status of their species, and queue orders. At its heart Far Horizons is a PBEM that relies on anticipation instead of instant feedback, we will not deviate from this core mechanic, hence games in which players use post, email, and the new electronic version are possible.
