Outlanders II

This entry is part of the PBM List.

Outlanders II set in a post apocalyptic era which follows nuclear and biochemical war resulting in nuclear winter and mutations (both plant and animal). There are three major periods in Earth's history following the Nukecaust of 2043. 0 to 20 years is the period most humans spend in fallout shelters, venturing forth only for the most basic of needs - many dying as a result of inadequate protection. 21 to 50 years after the nukecaust is an era of utter barbarism. Only after 50 years does humanity begin the slow climb to regain a semblance of technology. The game begins at 130 years after the Nukecaust, in the year 2187 in the region of the northern end of Gila National Park on the border of New Mexico and Arizona.

Now the non-human denizens will range from mutated animals to `demons' to `gods'. (The latter are just what people claim, not fact. A mutant or alien might LOOK like a demon or claim to be a god. That doesn't make it true.) Humans have turned to old religions and cults. Most of the deities are of the sort in early Neolithic history - i.e. pre-Christianity.

There are three common "mutants" though some believe they may be aliens or even mutations resulting from Pre-Dark scientists experimenting with alien DNA and unleashing a proteus virus plague. The truth has been obscured over time. But these mutants do resemble demons of mythology of gaming fiction, such as succubi, Pit Fiends, Nosferatu, hell hounds. The truth is vastly more complicated.

While there will be strong elements of psionics, there is no magic here. Most effects will have a basis in technology, although that technology may as well be magic to anyone without a very advanced understanding of quantum mechanics. Yes, players may be `Freezies', humans placed in cryogenic suspension before the holocaust. At the very least PC's must be a cut well above the average as the goal of the game is to do more than survive. It is to start the process of rebuilding civilization on the ashes of the old.

Characters should be submitted with a well written background. Skills DO matter. I do recommend some technical skills. Most (but not all) human settlements lack the ability to make modern rifles and are limited to feudal weaponry. Horses have regained some of their earlier value as steeds. There are still a lot of cars and motorcycles around, running on ethanol, but in various states of disrepair. Technology is still struggling.

I expect decent spelling and grammar (or colloquial speech). And it should be written in 3rd person, past tense. The game is to be rated R, for graphic violence and adult situations. While cursing will be allowed, I am not looking for players to use this is an excuse to curse every other word. Adult scenes should be handled as Fade to Black. If you are an adult, you shouldn't have to ask what is going on back there. (Just fill the GM in on the basic results.) If you aren't sure ... ask first.
