Just an observation on a "Gathering Peascods that has nothing to do 
w/periodicity:

If you have a very large circle, it's still possible to get all the way 
around in the time allotted.  The trick is to encourage people to go deep into the 
circle when they step in.  Every yard inward they get yields a 3/2 reduction 
in the amount of distance they have to travel around the circle, and it adds up 
real fast, even with the steps to get back out to their places.
