Hi all:
I think I've gotten enough feedback to see that the re-creation of social
context does matter to people. It's pretty clear that the lottery mechanism
I proposed is not wanted, and we'll go with the standard "chooser's partner
gets the next choice" method.
Use tokens or not, to help keep track of who's had a choice or not? I'm
still waffling on this one. I expect it will be a small enough group that,
if we stick with segregated seating, we could all keep track without tokens,
but tokens would probably help if we go for mixed seating.
I personally like segregated seating, for me it's a mental tool that helps
me think "16th-c" rather than "2003" or "AS 38". Philip said last week
that he likes it also - anyone else want to express an opinion on the
matter? I understand that for some people it triggers unpleasant memories
of high school dances, but I never went to any :), so I don't have those
associations. I have some vague notion that I've seen English drawings or
paintings of dancing that show mixed seating, and I think it wouldn't
necessarily be incompatible with this format.
And if you've got any repeat-structure issues with any of the music on our
candidate playlist, please speak up Real Soon Now.
