The Seicento Caroso ball (aka 'real' Caroso, aka Negri and Carosos repetoire
only) will take place on Wednsday night, 9:30-11 pm. Yes, it overlays
Midnight Madness - so get dressed up, go shopping for a while, dance for a
while, then more shopping.
At present, we think the band is going to be Rufina, John, Deonna, Udalrich,
and Alethea.
Light refreshments will be provided.
I sent out the initial wish-list playlist a while ago, it is repeated below.
I hope to post a final playlist during the last week of July (expect some
shrinkage). We need information about repeat structures. For example,
Contrapasso in Due, Contrapasso da farsi in ruota, and Contrapasso Nuovo all
use the same sheet music. But Due uses AAA BBCBBCBBC AA BBCBBCBBC, while (I
think) the preferred reconstructions of the other 2 are played AAA BBCBBCBBC
AAA BBCBBCBBC. Also, I am proposing '8 times through the 17-bar phrase' as
the duration of the Canario - does anyone want to make a case for a
different number of repeats? (I think 11 to 12 minutes worth is excessive.)
So, if you think there's any question of the repeat structure for a dance
you like, please let us know now.
I propose to use an alternative to my usual format for this session:
No segregated seating.
Host and maestro del ballo collapsed into a single role (me).
Choose a dance, then choose a partner/rest of set, ask who knows it if
necessary.
Lottery mechanism for who gets to choose a dance next:
- First round: everyone draws lots (latecomers get handed theirs
sequentially as they arrive). When you choose a partner (and the rest of a
set), *all* lots are handed in. Ballo del Fiore and Il Piantone are
exceptions, only the chooser hands in the lot.
- Second round: the people who did not choose during the first round draw
lots, only the chooser hands their lot in.
- Third round, if there's time: same as first.
Feel free to suggest either tweaks to this system, or propose a completely
different one, bearing in mind that it ought to attempt to distribute turns
fairly while allowing for participants to arrive late, leave early, and
change seats during the session.
This is a (proposed) deliberate attempt to adapt the 'one couple or one set
at a time' format to the people I expect to attend, as opposed to attempting
to recreate a 16th-c Italian formal dance party. If I get no feedback, this
is what I'm going with. If you think the recreation thing is the way to go,
speak up, and we'll discuss the matter. I *tried* to get a related
discussion going on sca-dance, but it didn't seem to engage people's
attention there ...
