What are the criteria for acceptable Pennsic bassadanza music?

Have the musicians tried improvisation?  I know that some of the
folks who show up for music in the barn have done so in other
settings, but I'm asking if this has been tried at Pennsic.
(If not, this might be an experiment that is better-suited for
the dance tent than for the barn.)
