I don't know that the cross pieces are necessary -- houses have pretty
sturdy floors, and they have (pretty much) only joists running every
16 inches.  So something like

should be sufficient.  (Unless there's something I really don't know
about housing construction.)  I think the 4 foot braces would be
slightly sturdier than the 8 foot ones, but more work.  Or 8 foot
braces with a few smaller cross pieces between joists to help maintain
square.
