It is clear we have to break up dances somehow. I doubt that the best way is by
ball set.
This subordinates the teacher to the material. Assuming we are not going to
have an overabundance of teachers (I think this a highly likely suposition), the
teacher needs to come first, and then we split up the dances according to who
feels best about teaching what.
Breaking up the material to suit the teacher also provides more flexibility; if
we break it up by set, changing stuff around will be difficult. If we break it
up by teacher (or by some other arbitrary grouping that gets assigned to
particular teachers), and upon getting to Pennsic, the teacher assigned (for
instance) Parson's Farewell realizes that while he can teach his version quite
well, it is different from that done by 95% of the known world, he can easily
just trade it with someone.
On the other hand, you bring up a good point about repeating a dance the
subsequent night (and even perhaps for one more night, too? ).
Perhaps we want to all keep in mind to make sure to make it to the barn (or
wherever we will be) the night before we teach, so as to have an idea of what
needs to be repeated for memory, what needs to be taught again, etc.?
