Sorry, I was unclear.

There was a list of about 40 dances for the ball.  There were about 5 nights of
teaching beforehand, so each nightly group had as a mandate that they teach *at
least* the 8 dances assigned to that night.  (And it was set up beforehand that
the teachers each night had assigned to them dances they actually knew).

Figuring one would get through 15-20 dances a night with full teaching, this
seems like it would leave at least half requests (I don't remember how this
actually worked out, though - I am making up numbers here, based on what I think
are reasonable guesses, rather than memories of that particular year).
