Professional musicians were generally middle class, yes. There were also many amateur musicians in the era, who might dress better, and a few high-class musicians. Comfortable headgear for the era is quite simple, as you've indicated. Fancy headgear for a middle class woman would be a coif with a flat cap on top of it. Or you can wear an Italian-style shapeless sack sort of thing.
