IIRC, there's an Irish myth about the harp of the Dagda that specifies a red
leather bag.

I'm not so sure that there are many or any surviving cases. A possible
source would be:
Crane, Fredrick. _Extant Medieval Musical Instruments: A Provisional
Catalogue by Types_. University of Iowa Press, 1972. ISBN
87745-022-6.
But it would be luck if he says anything about cases, either about
their absense or presence.
