I would characterize them as loose, conversational iambs -- and I do believe
tetra- and tri- meter will serve if the verses are broken down line for
line. Here is the first group oraganized in that way:
I am a well-born country maid,
my home the valley gay
but once I dwelled a month at court
in the fine spring month of May
in hall the whirl of pageantry,
fine silks and silver dags
one courtier spoke simplicity
dressed in a poet's rags
the poet was a gentle soul;
I was young and so unsure
I loved the man most tenderly
but longed for home the more
Follow me to summer's end; love me as e'er ye can
I cherish thee in such sort as ne'er loved another man
Look up to see the blackbird's wing that flies above the hill
And see my own heart fly, and know I live to love thee still
Thank you for taking a look...
