As I recall, the "Monk of Salzburg" presents some horn music in a treatise
or collection of around 1400.
One famous fanfare is Josquin's Vive le roy from around 1500 for Louis
XII.
Also, there's Dufay's _Gloria ad modum tubae_ from the 1420's, maybe (I
seem to recall that it's regarded as an early work), a really lively
setting with an ostinato having a leap of a fourth which could be
performed on a horn (as it has been done in some modern recordings).
Other pieces have fanfare-like motives, for example _Alarme, Alarme_ by
Grimace (late 14th century or thereabouts), one of the delightful
"program" pieces of the time, and of course Jannequin's battle chanson to
celebrate the victory of Francois I at Marignon in 1515, complete with
some artillery effects.
Most respectfully,
Margo Schulter
