They are very similar besides in volume.  I think the modern trombone 
has a couple of dudads like a trigger which the sackbut lacks.  Also, when 
playing with a sackbut ensemble, you tend to have a bunch of sizes.  To 
give an example of the volume difference: in the UVA early music ensemble 
last semester, three of us from the Baroque strings joined the brass 
ensemble.  The lineup: two cornetti, six sackbuts, two violins, and a 
viola.  The strings came through loud and clear.

Oh, and if you want to drive a trumpet player mad, make him learn to play 
the cornetto.
