Not true. In Modern Welsh bardd = poet:

from The Welsh Pocket Dictionary / Y Geiriadur Bach (only one I have with me at work):

bardd, eg. ll. beirdd, cyfansoddwr barddoniaeth, prydydd, awenydd. POET.

barddoni, be. cyfansoddi barddoniaeth, prydyddu. TO COMPOSE POETRY.

poet, n. bardd, prydydd, awenydd.

musician, n. cerddor.
