There are inexpensive modern vihuelas available--they
don't look exactly like the period ones, but they are
about that size, have five strings and usually tied-on
frets. If you live someplace with a large Hispanic
population you might be able to find one
locally--otherwise they are available on the web (Lark
in the Morning and several other web merchants carry
them). They turn up on e-bay from time to time.
