This actually has continued at least into the recent
past (recent for some of us, anyway--I'm dating myself
here): There was an early R & B song, "Work With Me
Annie" that must have spawned at least a dozen replies
and sequels--"Roll With Me Henry," "Annie Had a Baby,"
"Annie's Been Workin' on the Midnight Shift," etc. I
don't know that songwriters do this any more, but it's
not just a medieval thing.
