It's not your music education which trips you up; musicians don't
usually learn anything about pronouncing phonetic symbols. I used
to date a linguist, but she didn't sing...
There's a similar sort of notation in dance, called Labanotation.
I've never met anyone who could read it, but it supposedly is
extremely accurate at concisely depicting exactly where your arms and
legs go.
