minstrel: Recorder advice

The plastic recorders by Aulos and Yamaha are equal to many higher priced
mass-produced wooden recorders. The plastic Nova ine by Dolmetsch is not as
inexpensive but is also a fine instrument.

As for wooden recorders -- Gill and Hohner make good quality student woods.
Mollenhaeur and Moeck make very fine production recorders in wood but not
exactly inexpensive. Buying older woods on eBay and other used sources is
generally ill advised for group work unless you are aware of what you are
purchasing. A wooden instrument that hasn't been oiled in 30 years is not a
good deal in many cases....

If what you are looking for is a decent quality plastic instrument that will
hold a reasonable group standard, then the Yamaha 20 models and the better
Yamaha 300 series are probably your best bets. The sopranos are very
inexpensive and the 20 series alto is generally under $20. Our university
Recorder Ensemble is using the Yamaha 300 series with good group results.

If your group is adult, then they may well enjoy the alto and tenor more
than the often too shrill soprano.

A friend of mine just went through Lark In The Morning and ordered a
bunch of student recorders for $5 ea. for a class he's teaching. He says
they're passable and do the job. I don't have their contact info, but if
someone else does...
