You might check into the "gaita galega", bagpipe of
the celtic-influenced north of Spain. I have read
that bagpipes are recorded earliest there of anywhere,
and there are some respresented in architecture and
illumination of the Middle Ages. There are some
websites on it. The ones I have seen look like a nice
size and sound volume too. (ie, going into the middle
of the next field is not required to avoid complaints
while practicing)
Exercise caution if buying bagpipes from Lark in the
Morning, if you want advice from many of my
semi-professional musician friends. At least, shop
around and if at all possible have someone more
experienced check something out before you plunk down
non-refundable funds. If I have to pay my teacher for
a lesson to try something, I'll do it (even if it's
"too good a bargain"-if it's not playable at all,
that's good money you could have put into a real
instrument, while decent instruments are very
frequently resellable for close to the original price.
Voice of experience here!) Antonia
