describes another piece called "Maid in Bedlam,
however it does mention "Tom O'Bedlam" as dating
from 1618. I found http://www.shakespeare-
online.com/faq/learfaq.asp
which discusses the use of the term "Tom O'Bedlam"
to describe an inmate of the famous London asylum in
Shakespeare's "King Lear." (BTW, Bedlam, or
Bethlehem
Hospital now houses the Imperial War Museum.)

http://www.contemplator.com has no less than six
pieces containing the phrase "Johnny's gone for a
soldier." There's quite a nice version by James
Taylor on the soundtrack to the PBS miniseries,
"Liberty."
