minstrel: Marching songs

Good folk,

Do we in our collective wisdom know much about 1200-1450 English (or German)
Marching songs? I presume they were a period feature of most armies. I am
most interested to learn about rythmic structure. Are we looking at basic
(forgive the OOP terminology) 2/4-4/4ish stuff or did they swing it around
the corners a la Glenn Miller or a Highland pipe-band drum Corps?

Cantor/refrain?
or
Verse/Chorus?

Or (God forbid, :-) ) Just devotional hymns with dirty words?

Side question. When is the earliest reference to "The white cockade"? The
earliest I know is Jacobean, so a bit useless..

Regards to all
