I was a professional musician before I joined the SCA. And one of the
reasons I joined the SCA (after retiring from playing rock & roll for
money) was to be able to play music for an audience without the pressure
of trying to make a career of it. (There was also the minor fact that
my musical interests had changed). I've been a little disappointed in
the level of interest in period music in the SCA (most people seem to
prefer filk), but it seems unrealistic to see the SCA as a springboard
to a career in early music (a degree from Indiana U. is a better
approach). I like the fact that I can just stroll around playing tunes
at an event and people can listen or not listen as they choose. Of
course, I'd much prefer that they listen (and throw money).
