Or even a 3-holed pipe -- they can be pretty loud.  They use the overtone 
series to get all the notes, since there are only a few holes .  3-holed 
pipes were generally used for dance music along with a drum played by the 
same person.  Susato (I think) sells some, although I've never actually 
bought one.
