Were you doing very vocally challenging material? I once played an
extended gig at the LA County Fair; 18 straight days/nights, 3 hours per on
weeknights and 5 hours per on weekends. We were immediately adjacent to a
stall that sold wine margaritas; they loved us, and always said we could
have whatever we wanted free. I found very quickly that I could nurse ONE
wine margarita and still do a creditable job, but anything over that and it
affected my vocal control to such a point that my high notes and triplets
suffered greatly. I think for most people, by the time they had enough
alcohol to calm their nerves, it would have a deleterious effect on their
performance.
