Lowlanders were more like people from northern England (Northumbria) than
they were like the Gaelic Highlanders. People in Northumbria were mor elike
their neighbors in the Scottish borders than those in southern England.
Anda bout half the Scots were Lowlanders--in 1560 there was still a very
strong Gaelic/Highland culture.
