minstrel: periodness of the great highland bagpipe?

I had thought I posted this yesterday, but it seems not to have gone through.

Just briefly on this topic - 

A really good source on the question would be Francis Collinson's  "National 
and Traditional Music of Scotland"  (or that may be "Traditional and 
National" - I'm not at home to check.)

Also, by the same author,  "The Bagpipe. The History of a Musical 
Instrument," which is even harder to find, but try academic libraries.
