The following are some texts and/or settings associated with Advent,
Christmas and Epiphany from period or slightly OOP. Of course, many of
the settings were used with other texts and in other circumstances.
Where the text and setting are not separated by paragraph, the two are
associated with one another. The source is McKim, LindaJo H., The
Presbyterian Hymnal Companion (Westminster/John Knox, Louisville - 1993)
Text: Creator of the Stars at Night -- 9th c. Latin hymn
Setting: Conditor Alme Siderum -- 9th c. plainsong
Setting: Mit Freunden Zart -- Georg Vetter -- 1566; an earlier version
exists -- Il faut que tous mes esprits -- Genevan Psalter -- 1551
Text: Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Might Gates -- while not published until
1642, the hymn was written by Georg Weissel (1590-1635)
Text: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel -- originally a series of seven antiphons
for Advent from no later than the 9th c. in the 12th or 13th century an
unknown poet chose 5, rearranged them and added the refrain to produce
the well know hymn.
Setting: Veni Emmanuel -- reportedly, the melody was found in a 15th
Century Processional. The harmonies are much later.
Setting: Valet Will Ich Dir Geben -- Melchior Teschner, 1613
Text: Savior of the Nations, Come -- ascribed to Ambrose; 4th c.
Setting: Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland -- adaptation of a Latin
palinsong; this tune, 12-13th c.
Text: Good Christian Friends (Men), Rejoice -- 14th c. ascribed to Peter
of Dresden (d.1440)
Setting: In Duchi Jubilo -- 14th c.; published, 1535
Text: On this Day Earth Shall Sing -- from Piae Cantiones (1582)
Setting: Personent Hodie -- written 1360, present form from Piae
Cantiones (1582)
Text: Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming: ~ 15th c.; earliest publish date
1599
Setting: Es Ist Ein' Rose 14th - 15th c.; earliest publish date 1599
Setting: Greensleeves -- published 1580
Text: From Heaven Above -- Martin Luther, published 1535
Setting: Vom Himmel Hoch -- possibly Luther, published 1539
Setting: Winchester Old -- first appeared 1592
Text: 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime -- a Canadian hymn attributed to
Fra. Jean de Brebeuf (1593-1649)
Setting: Une Jeune Pucelle -- a 16 c. French carol tune
Puer Nobis Nascitur -- variant form of Puer Nobis, found in a 15c. Trier
