The Rose round is old, old, old. The version we sing in Northshield goes,
"Ros-a, Ros-a, Ros-a, Ros-a
Alle nicht by the Rose I lay
Darf Ich not the Rose-a schteal-a
Yet Ich bore the fleur away."
or,
Rose (4x)
All night by the Rose I lay
Dared I not the Rose to steal, and
Yet I bore the flower away
Pretty racy, eh? Thanks to Lord Owain Alun forfinding it. The renfest
version is the "folkie" version popularized by Peter, Paul,
and Mary, etc., way back in the third quarter of the 20th Century. Not
QUITE period. ;^
Nothing wrong with it, depending on the venue. it's easy to learn and
sing, and the Ah Poor Bird verse makes a haunting descant. (The version
I know is, Ah poor bird, wend thy flight, far oh far above the cares of
this dark night.) There's another bawdy verse to it that goes, .. well,
never mind how it goes.
The Hey Ho Nobody Home bit is most likely from wassailing songs; PPM and
the Kingston Trio used it in their arrangement of "Soalcake."
Remember the words of Arlo Guthrie - If you can't sing well, sing loud!
