People can't really converse in that sort of noise, either.
Well said. I have to add: I was once invited to harp before the high
table (sadly, near the end of the feast.) The volume of conversation was
so high that I literally could not hear myself play. One member of the
royalty, who *wanted* to hear the harping, came and sat on the floor next
to me & leaned her ear against the side of my harp so she could hear
(after which we both went outside to the bardic starting up in a quiet
corner.)
That's *too* loud!.
