Good gentles, there is something that I perhaps need to clarify. I have
never said anything about forcing people to be quiet when someone is
performing. I have never said that "everyone must be quiet when the bard
is on stage."

There is a difference between no one talking and being quiet enough for a
performer to be heard. I don't object to conversation.

I have had the experience of being in the middle of a scheduled performance
and having an unscheduled performance begin at top volume and close
quarters. I've also seen someone get up while we were in the middle of a
(scheduled and invited-by-the-autocrat) song and demand quiet throughout
the hall so they could make a toast or presentation to the crown. Have
other folk had this experience?

I also object to noise that rises high enough that performers cannot be
heard by those making an effort to listen to them from a short distance.
People can't really converse in that sort of noise, either.

Vivien
