Actually, that was me, not Efenwealt. ;-) But you can pick on me, I'm
used to it. I think what hurts a lot of research are the romantic, rosy
coloured sources as well. Take Griogal Cridhe, for instance. The reason
I was passing on the 1570 date was because the recording I learned it
from, from award winning Gaelic singing group mac-talla, credits it as
being from 1570 and cried it as one of the earlist Scots Gaelic songs we
have record of. Maybe that's how they learned it as well. But me, the
little Carolina boy, I assumed these guys knew their business, and I felt
good in passing Griogal Cridhe around as a period tune. Later research,
that you pointed me in the direction of, casts shadows of doubt on that
date. I think the method you described abover would be best.
And as a PS to Greg, could you please change my subscription to this list
