>What pieces
>would be included on a 'play list' for many SCA events and/or dances?

I'm so pleased to hear this question! I can answer it for Northern
Ansteorra. Avatar of Catsprey's _Early Period and Popular Dance Music_
book is a wonderful resource. It has something like 80 songs, most with
harmonies, some in more than one key, some with words, and most with
chords marked for accompaniment. Avatar has a home page at
http://www.flash.net/~avatar1/

Samuel Piper's also has a whole lot of books of early music: ballads, as
well as dance music. His Playford book is one we play from a lot for the
dancers, although his repeat structures are sometimes wrong for the way
the dances are done in the SCA. His harmonies are darker than Avatar's,
but his arrangements are often more interesting. His home page is at

>That is - do we have a "top 10"?

The dances that I find that we are asked for the most often around here,
in no particular order, are:

Black Nag
Korabushka
Montarde
Trenchmore
Hit or Miss (Daphne)
Newcastle
Heart's Ease
Hole in the Wall
Heralds in Love
and Rufty Tufty.

I hate to be limited to ten, though; I'm leaving out a great many popular
dance songs. I hope this information is helpful to you. I play with the
Merry Musicians of Mooneschadowe, and I'm always glad to hear of other
SCA musicians.

I would also be interested in Mr. Blount's top ten list, if he would like
to share it, wherever he happens to be from.
