   Actually:
   1 -- It has been noted that this decision applies only to 
official pronouncements and publications.
   2 -- It isn't recent; it's at _least_ 6-7 years old. (It dates to a time
when Hilary was still Steward.)
   3 -- It is reasonable in a sense because "mundane" was being used in 
a perjorative fashion and the feeling was that we wanted to get away from
an image of "us vs. them".
   4 -- There are lots of ways to refer to "mundane" items which aren't as
intrusive to the atmosphere of an event.

   I'm not a great fan of "The BoD", but in this case, especially in its  
limited applicability, I think that the ruling was correct.
