I would recommend an inexpensive small guitar, either classical or wire
strung.  You can tune it like a lute, or just go with standard tuning
depending on what you are doing.  Others have expressed the concern about
travel guitars so I won't need to.

If you are really brave, something that I have had good luck with is
mandolin.  Don't go for the lute-backed variety...aside from being too
quiet they are also not Period.  Flat back/top mandolins are tenor citterns.

Mid-Missouri and Road to the Isles both make fine, solid wood instruments
for around $300.  RttI sells direct, MM only thru dealers.
